I Set the Toaster on Fire

I love bagels. I love the crunchy cinnamon bagels from Panera. Monday we went to Panera and bought 4 bagels so we could have them at home. I bought some nice whipped cream cheese to schmear on. Fast forward to yesterday morning. I sliced up my bagel and put it in the toaster I have here.(I really am missing my bagel cuter from home) I looked over and I see smoke rising out of the toaster. I popped up the bagel and got it out and next thing I see flames shooting out. I unplugged the toaster and hit it with a glass of water. The fire went out and I could see the crunchy cinnamon topping stuck to the inside walls. I tried to get it out but this toaster doesn't have a metal door to open on the bottom. Okay that did it for me, I went to Kohl's and bought an Oster Toaster which can handle long and wide bread and bagels. I have the same toaster at home and I love it. My previous one lasted 18 years so this one should be a good investment. I have burned many a toast but I have never set the toaster on fire before!! lol I guess one is never to old for something new!! How about you, ever set the toaster on fire?

No, never had the toaster on fire, but bought quite a few of them over the years. They never lasted 18 years.

I have never put a toaster on fire, the one I am using is 16 years old. The one I had in France lasted 25 years.

Oh, my! How scary. I'm so glad you didn't start the toast and then leave the room ... which I have done before!

@BelleStarr - Well that is one way to get a new kitchen ... although I don't recommend it.

Not yet. I'm glad you saved the bagel but sorry you lost the toaster and had to buy a new one. 18 years is a long time to have a toaster. Though I don't know how long I've had mine. It's been awhile.

The new one is great and I am sure it will give me many years of great service. My other one I know how old it was because everything we have is from after the house fire.

@BelleStarr I'm sorry you had a house fire, but that would be easy to date things.

My two youngest children once got a piece of toast stuck in the toaster. They put a pencil in the toaster to get the toast out. The pencil caught on fire and they got scared and threw the toaster in the middle of the street. i came home and saw the toaster in the middle of the street.

I've never burned out a toaster, but we don't use our toaster much either, maybe only once a week on Sundays. I'm glad that there was no real damage with this incident.

No the damage was inside the toaster but it still works. The good news is I mad my bagels this morning in the new toaster without incident. lo

No, I can't say I've done that, though I have had bread get stuck in it. I managed to turn it odff before anything drastic happened, then scraped it out. Enjoy your new toaster.

I don't think I've ever actually seen flames come out of mine but in the past I've replaced toasters when stuck on bits of bread, etc just kept making smoke. Good thing you didn't lose your bagel in the process hope the new toaster works better

No fires in my toasters! The huge New York City bagels we get have plenty of wiggle room. I laughed when you said schmear. My kind of lingo.

I've never set a toaster on fire, but I set my hair dryer on fire about once a year lol Smart thinking unplugging the toaster before throwing water on it. :-)

Gosh that is a bit drastic action to go and buy yourself a new toaster and one you feel comfortable with! I remember seeing a little Japanese man put a croissant in a toaster in Thailand a few years back. It was a open air restaurant in the middle of the jungle but half way up a mountain. You could see the black smoke wafting over the valley. I could not do anything for laughing! It was hilarious seeing him trying to fan down the flames which just made it worse!

Well the fire just pushed me where I wanted to go, I like a toaster that fits longer pieces of bread. I didn't like the other toaster, it came with my house. I am not going to waste it, I am going to bring it up to our cottage, I hate the one I have their even more. I also had gift cards I had gotten for my reward points so it didn't cost me anything.

I have had one go up in flames, it certainly is scary when it happens, I tossed mine out the back door. And from there to the trash can...

Lucky you didn't have a fire in the house. That happened to me one time, and I was able to unplug the toaster oven and throw it out in the snow. btw, I had bagels for breakfast too.
