Have you tried knitting with toothpicks?

Knitting with toothpicks

I wanted to make a knitting gnome, so I thought of using the toothpicks as the knitting needles for the gnome, and tried to knit with the toothpicks for a few rows. It was not easy at the beginning, as the toothpicks are very short and thin, but after the first row, it seemed not so hard that I thought. It's actually quite fun. I don't think I am going to use toothpicks to knit a proper item, but I think it's good for making card or craft. I have just searched online, and found there are actually many people knit with toothpicks, for craft making. Image: My first knitting with toothpicks - that's the finished product.

That's really cute. I should imagine it would be hard on your eyes after a while.

@kaka135 I guess you'd adjust to it. At my age I might find it a bit difficult.

That's so amazing that you can even use the toothpicks to knit. My mom is very good at knitting but unfortunately I can't learn it from her.

I have met some friends from China here, and they all seem to know how to knit. They told me knitting is quite popular in China, they'd knit for winter clothes. Perhaps they were staying in the North.

@youless There are actually quite many China girls marrying to Malaysians. My cousin-in-law is from China as well. I guess it's because there are many Malaysians studying universities in China, hence they met their wife when they were studying together. I have met a few China ladies in my neighborhood, and know one of them very well, as she always goes to the playground I go as well. They are over 30 years old. They told me they knitted when they were young in China.

@kaka135 In fact I am surprised to hear that you know some Chinese friends who know how to knit. I wonder whether this is popular in China, but I can ensure you that in my mom's time it was quite popular. Today knitting a sweater is much more expensive than buying it and this is why fewer people want to knit it. In fact I ever saw a knitting toy via the net, I am much more interested in that

I haven't try with two pencils, that sounds interesting! Perhaps I'll just give it a try. Knitting is so fun as we can just use any tools to knit!

Wow that is awesome! I have never thought you could knit with toothpicks. How about bamboo skewers, could you knit with those also?

Thanks. Yes, I think we can also knit with skewers. Skewers should be easier, as they are thicker and longer. With the toothpicks, besides they are thin, my problem with them was they are too short, the knitted yarn kept falling off from the toothpicks.

@kaka135 Yes toothpicks are more fragile also! Glad it worked out for you though!!

Great idea. I first thought - why would anyone do that - but I can see why now. Too cute.

It's definitely not a project for a beginner, otherwise it might stop the newbie from knitting anymore.

I didn't think it's quite fun, I just wanted to make something small for the small gnome.

Yes, I never thought of using toothpicks before, and never thought I could manage to knit a small piece.

That is interesting. I have some pretty skinny knitting needles; I think I would use them.

That's good. Though I prefer to use thicker knitting needles, as they are easier and quicker to finish a knitting piece, I think skinny needles make something nicer.
