What Would you do if a Tornado was Approaching?

Yesterday I was thinking about how we would prepare for a tornado. These thoughts arised because we were under a tornado watch the day before. The weather was a bit rough a few days ago and it seemed as if a small tornado would possibly approach our city. Thank God that didn't occur but we should still consider a plan. How would you prepare for a tornado?

I would go into our basement and stay there until it passed. I am glad it did not hit the area that you live in.

I'm glad we didn't get a tornado and you're blessed to have a basement. Enjoy your day.

I wish I had a decent answer. We get horrid winds at times- 40 to 60 miles an hour. Not a tornado but enough to cause damage and worry me cause I live in a double wide mobile that sits on a little hill. I am not sure that my running to the bathroom would help me or not. No basement. There is a deck and an underneath to it. Maybe there if I could bend good enough to get under that area!!

If a tornado hits, lie down in the bath tub. That will protect you a bit if there is no other shelter.

I can't imagine how worrisome it must be to go through a storm while living in a mobile home. Perhaps finding a safe haven would be better.

@Teep11 I agree but not sure how much time I'd have. We have a couple of outbuildings. Maybe the pump house would be sturdy enough.

Totally not prepared here in Southern California. We had a tornado advisory last time it rained for a short period (like 15 minutes, first time ever)!

The only place we could go in our house is our hall way because that is the only place where there are no direct windows.

I suppose we're in the same boat. Preparations are something to think about.

Finding a safe place is wise. I'll pray all the way through it.

I'd get out of my second story apartment, that's for sure! I've weathered a hurricane before, and am set up for other natural disasters - have some minor medical supplies, about eighteen gallons of bottled water per person, and a bunch of canned goods.

Two days ago we were under tornado warnings here in Florida, and one touched down not too far from where I live, killing two people. What makes it tough to prepare for a tornado here in Florida is that we don't have basements and storm cellars. If there is an approaching tornado, we can only hope there is a strong interior room with a strong doorway frame to hide in. I've also read to jump in the bathtub and pull a mattress over yourself. But, seeing the damage a tornado can do, I'm not sure there are any safe places in our houses, unless one has a basement or storm cellar.

I know what you mean. Florida has unpredictable weather and not having a basement is a disadvantage but prayer is my advantage. I hope the weather cooperates and we're tornado free. I'm sorry to hear that people lost their lives.

@Teep11 The worst thing is, the tornado hit in the middle of the night when everyone was sleeping. That's the hardest thing...to prepare for a tornado...when you don't even know it's coming.

We don't expect to see tornadoes here but we do prepare for bushfires.

Brush fires are dangerous as well. I can't imagine going through that.

I will say a prayer and sit tight till its over. God will protect me or I will go met him, either way that is about anyone can do.

Prayer would definitely be the first action of protection and using wisdom is also necessary.

I have a reoccurring nightmare that I'm being chased by one. Truly terrified.
