Why I Hate Laptops

Last November my desktop computer died. Since then I've been using my laptop. I won't even say trusty laptop because I certainly don't trust it. I started using this laptop when I was in the nursing home and since my son didn't bring a mouse for me to use with it was forced to use that pad on the bottom of the keyboard. What a JOKE! It took forever to get anything done because I had a hard time navigating without a mouse. Now with a mouse it isn't much better. Well it is but it isn't. I know that didn't make sense, so let me explain why I hate laptops and as soon as I get my new tower I will NEVER use one again. My cursor goes anywhere it wants to and will even start typing in the middle of words up at the top of the page. Then I will need to delete and get back to where it should be. The caps button is almost on top of the A and if I even barely touch it instead of the A will turn the caps on and I need to backtrack and start over so everything isn't in caps. There isn't a number keypad. All the keys associated with home, end, insert, and no not delete are along the side and in a secret code so I have to figure out what the are. Page up and down are also on the side in secret code. It took me forever to figure out the foreign language on this keyboard - I think it's French, in order to know what the keys are. I bought this second hand and didn't realize it had a foreign keyboard until I tried to work on it for the first time. Getting things highlighted to delete is next to impossible and takes forever to accomplish. At least it feels like it. Then there's the fact this laptop is ancient and barely works properly. Of course I do know there are faster laptops, but not this one. Also laptops from what I've gathered don't have delete buttons. It's the backspace. Extremely inconvenient. In order to delete I need to highlight or place the cursor at a point where I can backspace to delete. Totally frustrating. So will I ever buy a laptop? Only if I'm not in my right mind at the time. I used to think they were some great invention until I started working on one. I need my desktop back! Thanks for reading.

I thought I was the only person who is a big fan of the desktop. I also HATE laptops. I do not like the position of the keyboard and that dumb mouse pad - Grrrr! Give me a separate keyboard and mouse any day. All my friends laptops get so hot too, don't you think the towers stay cooler and can work a lot longer without overheating?

Absolutely! I know the box thing the cord plugs into gets quite warm.

@just4him It does get quite warm, what good is that - maybe for melting a Hershey bar.

@howard96h The only thing good about a melted Hershey bar is to put it in a glass of milk and make chocolate milk with it. When I had my laptop in bed with me one day when I was sick, I felt it and worried it would burn my bed.

I was hands down a fan of desktop computers. I would not want a laptop at all until I went to school and found out that laptops were more useful and convenient for on the go! Especially when I have class gaps of a few hours and had nothing to do and it's too far of a drive to go home. Now, I don't even own a desktop and I solely rely on my laptop! I sure do need a mouse though as I don't like to use the touchpad. I have been teaching my mom to use my laptop sometimes as she pays bills.. and she absolutely hates the laptop. Especially when I forget to hook up my mouse and she has to use the touchpad. Plus, she says it takes longer to navigate due to the numbers too are at the top and not like the regular desktop computers.

@infatuatedbby I don't think this laptop has a battery as it can't stay unplugged for very long. I blew a circuit one day last week and the message came up within a minute stating I needed to get plugged into a power source.

I need a power source at all times for my laptop. So I can't just take it and go.

I have a lap top and I love it. I have to have a mouse when I use my lap top. I do not like the thing you use .

I saw a picture you took once showing your laptop when you took the picture to show something else. I don't like my laptop either, but I think you guessed that.

I have a desktop and a laptop, but I use my desktop all the time. I never liked the touchpad and I do not like that small keyboard without the numeric pad. Nothing is as good as a desktop computer to work.

I think you just have to buy the right brand for you. There are lots of laptops now in a cheaper price but has an excellent features like HP but they don't have CD-ROM in it, but anyway if you are not really into burning files using a nero, USB is enough for external file storage. All laptops has delete buttons along with the backspace. Maybe the one that you have is a very old one or has a very different features unlike, HP, Samsung, IBM, Acer or Packbell etc.

Old is an understatement, more like ancient. I would never ever trust a HP again. I've had three of them crash. I've already decided on the brand for my next tower and from experience in the workplace I never had a problem with it and from what I've heard from others they haven't either. I'm getting a Dell just as soon as I have the funds saved for it. I'm an author. I need a desktop.

I hear you LOUD and CLEAR! I started out on a desktop and after went through through a couple, I decided to try a laptop because I was taking classes and occasionally I would dog sit for a neighbor, so I thought my having a laptop, I could do my homework while I am taking care of the dog/cat. Like you said, that mouse on the keyboard is a joke and even with a mouse hooked up, for the kind of writing I do, I made so many mistakes that took twice as long to correct than when I had my desktop. Then my last semester I had my son build me a desktop computer and I love it. I still have the laptop, more or less gave it to my husband who doesn't get on the computer much and it is good for emergencies, like if my younger son is using the desktop and I need to check my mail or something. But I rarely use it. I hope you can get another desktop, they are so much better, even if I can't take them with me.

Once I get clear of all the necessary repairs to my car I will be saving for my tower again. I intended to get it tomorrow, that was the plan, until my car demanded attention.

I have been using a laptop for the last 15 years. The mouse is essential or I wouldn't use a laptop. But in all other regards, there is nothing different between a laptop's keyboard and a desk top. Of course they have delete buttons! You obviously are using a piece of junk and it might be a good idea to look at a new one and see that it is perfectly normal.

If I could take a picture of this keyboard you would understand why I hate it so much. There isn't a delete button anywhere on this laptop which is extremely annoying.

I remember the first time I used one of those navigation pads on a laptop I hated it. It took me a long time to get used to it and now it is second nature. I find that the laptop pros outweigh the cons.

I'm the opposite. I'd never consider buying a desktop ever again. Much prefer laptops for typing and tablets for reading books...a desktop would be utterly impractical for me.

I've never owned a tablet. I wanted to until I found out I can't do anything I want with it so it would be a waste of my money. I know lots of people love their laptops, and from what I've read in the comments here, the one I have is at the bottom of the barrel for good laptops, which it isn't.

@trivia79 Though the mouse makes it easier in some ways, the cursor navigates all over the screen taking me in places I don't want to be, even eliminating a post I was writing today and had to start over when I found myself in another profile instead of finishing up the post so I could get it posted. Very inconvenient. As soon as I have my tower, this is history.

I don't like desktops, as I can use my laptop, while sitting in my easy chair with the wireless keyboard on my lap. That is more convenient than using the laptop keyboard. I have had a desktop before, but I much prefer my laptop. as I can take it ouside and use it if I choose, whereas I couldn't do that with a desktop. Ny laptop is three years old, and it has a delete button, and also a numbered keypad at the top and on the side as well. Everyone is different though, and we all like different things, which is great too.

Is the keypad of your laptop is different than that of a desktop? My laptop has each and every button properly in place, and they are not less in number than a desktop.

Yes it is. I do not have a number keypad as a desktop keyboard has. It also has the different keys in different places on the laptop than on the desktop. All the letters are where they belong or I would be completely confused.

Goodness, your laptop sounds awful! I promise they aren't all that bad and they are actually more handy than a desktop in most cases, but your laptop sounds like a nightmare to use. I hope you can get your desktop back soon!
