This is a story about a 25 year old man and a woman who is 28. The story begins on a farm in Raxfield, Kansas. Keith once left the farm to become a sailor however he is haunted by a traumatic experience at sea and came back to the farm. He stays pretty much to himself leaving the woman to do most of the farm work. Sarah at times tells him he needs to at least take a shower once a week. Their relationship deteriates as time goes on. He fears so many things especially being near water which upsets her as she is the one who has to draw water from the well. She has told him he needs to gather eggs and feed the cattle or she will no longer cook for him just herself but it doesn't seem to register with him. He doesn't seem to care about much of anything and will probably just wither away to nothing. She tells him what a disappointment he would be to their parents if they were alive today.
