Making a photographic artifact

For my gaming campaign, I needed a damaged metal plate, with an inscription that the player had to figure out. How did I do it? Well, I used the awesome free art program called GIMP. I grabbed a picture of some fine grained rock with the right resolution. Then I made a new transparent layer, put the text on, blurred selected parts. Then I merged the layers then used the Emboss filter - playing with the settings - till I got the effect I needed. Surprisingly simple, surprisingly effective for what I needed.

well done, I thought it was a photo of an actual thing, rather than a created thing
