Freaky Event

I was sitting home relaxing today, catching up on some reading, when my next door neighbor called and asked if I wanted to go get some wings and watch football. Being that I had nothing else planned, I agreed to go. So him and his wife, and me and my girlfriend, all went to a local pub and enjoyed some good food and football. Somehow, we got on the subject of the paranormal, and spent a good portion of the evening talking about spooky events, ghosts, and other unexplained phenomenon. Apparently, through listening to each person's conversation, it seemed that over our lifetimes we had each encountered some pretty strange things. After we left the pub, we headed home. When I parked the truck and got out, I saw a weird glow coming out of the windows of my apartment up on the top floor of the building. I thought to myself that I must have left a light on. When my girlfriend and I entered my apartment, I realized the weird glow was coming from the tv, which was on. Which is totally weird, because at no point today was I ever watching tv! What made it even more weird was the fact that we had just been talking about ghostly stories while we were at the pub, so it kind of made the whole scene a little eerie! I checked upstairs and downstairs just to make sure everything was safe, and other than the tv being on, there was nothing else out of place in the apartment. My girlfriend is a little freaked out about the whole thing, and although I'm not too worried, it was kind of weird coming home to the tv being on. What do you think...could there be something paranormal going on, or could it have just been something perfectly explainable?

But that entity needed to watch TV and today it chose yours.

@moffittjc Well if they can walk through walls then there is no reason they can't enjoy themselves in other people's places, especially if they are out. Perhaps the G H O S T thought it was a normal weekday and didn't expect you home for hours, in which case the TV would be off and you would not suspect.

@pgiblett That would explain why my electric bill has been higher than usual! I have a ghost that likes to hang out in my living room when I'm not home and watch tv!

That's what I was thinking. Maybe a ghost showed up to haunt me, but I wasn't home, so he sat and watched tv until I got home. But then he was tired of waiting, so he left and went and haunted somebody else's house!

I have to admit that would be weird. Who knows? I have never really believed in ghosts despite several odd encounters of my own. Considering the subject matter of the conversation before this little incident, I am sure I'd have been a little freaked out.

It was just a strange coincidence I'm sure. I still have this particular tv, and it still will randomly turn itself on sometimes. We call it our ghost TV.

@porwest It has a preference for My 600 Pound Life. That, my friend, is a very haunting show.

@moffittjc lol. A haunted TV. Who knew it could be possible. Does it have a preference for certain shows?

One may never know but glad you are safe and just the TV was on. Still a little creepy to me though.

I didn't have any bad vibes that night, so I wasn't the least bit scared or concerned at all. If I would have walked in and felt a strange sense or presence, then I would have been a little freaked out!

I Am more apt to believe it was paranormal. If there was no evidence of break in and neither you or your gf touched the remote at all? No power outages to explain it?

Neither me nor my girlfriend had touched the remote all day long. I would be aware of any power outages or power surges if there were any, because the clock on my microwave and oven would be flashing if there was any kind of outage. So, as far as I can tell, the tv didn't come on because of a power surge or power outage, and it didn't come on due to my gf or I messing with the remote!

@moffittjc I figured it hadn't as I had thought about other devices flashing with the time being wrong. Were you and your neighbor ever talking about strange phenomena that happened within the building you live in?

@ScribbledAdNauseum Our building is fairly new, so nothing strange has ever happened here before. I've been living here since the building was built. Not deaths or murders have happened in our building, so no reason to expect anything ghostly like that!

It might have a short. That happened to my uncle's tv. My mother and I was at his house. We were "helping" him clean his house. All of sudden, the tv came on by itself. I know I had turned it off earlier. My uncle thinks it was a short because people were fixing some lights he had outside.

I tend to agree with your assessment. I think it was something perfectly explainable with the tv's electronics, more so than just believing it was paranormal. But it was interesting to come home to that right after discussing the paranormal at the bar with my friends.

@porwest I was just thinking about that as well. I would have been scared sh*tless if some ghost hunter show or horror movie was playing when I walked in the house.

I would have been freaked out. I can't say for sure on whether it was ghost related but it may have been. Even talking about ghosts and paranormal stories can be like an invitation to being haunted. Maybe a spirit of someone you know, your girlfriend knows or anyone you were around was the reason for your TV being on. I really don't know but it is odd how it happened after talking about spooky things and if you are 100% positive that you didn't leave the TV on then that makes it even more odd.

I am 100% certain I didn't leave the TV on. I very rarely ever watch TV, and on the particular day that happened, it had probably been about a week since I last watched TV. That's one of the reasons it made is seem so spooky to me.

I am pretty sure it is paranormal. It happens that, when I go down to make breakfast in the morning, I find the kitchen light on, or the one of our living room. I always check before going to bed and I am sure that I do not leave the lights on. I had some scary experiences, so I believe in paranormal.

Whether it is paranormal or not, I just thought it was very interesting that we had all just been talking about the paranormal down the street at the pub not 15 minutes before that, and then I come home to a tv being on that clearly wasn't on before I left. Very strange!

My opinion is the TV 'went on' by itself for whatever reason. Years ago we bought a cheap TV - it was big, but it had some quirks. We were expecting storms and I had the weather radio set. It woke me up and I went to the kitchen to pay closer attention to the words. As I got closer to the room with the tv I realized the tv was on - my husband has been watching it that evening and believe me he's to cheap to leave anything running! The tv went on by itself during the storm. We got rid of that tv after that. As for the timing of your event - coincidence.

Something perfectly explainable. There is no paranormal, there is just things we don't yet understand.

I'm sure there could be a perfectly valid justification for why that tv turned on by itself. Just because I don't know the answer doesn't mean it's paranormal! For all I know, someone in the next building over could have been pushing buttons on their own tv remote, and the signal could have carried over to my place. Probably not likely, but who knows? lol

You never know, and I have had some strange thing happen to me over my lifetime. The TV in my living room turns it's self off, not programmed to do so. I tell my husband and son it's our angels letting us know they are here.

When my daughter was an infant, there was a small lamp in her room that would turn itself on. It was the weirdest thing. We always said it was her angel protecting her.
