Writing Your Story

When I was writing my first novel I was reluctant to call it a fantasy. I'm not a big fan of the whole dragon and damsel scene that many associate as being a must in fantasy. I didn't even read fantasy, however, I did have characters that were strictly that and had to resign myself to the fact.
My method of writing may be a bit unconventional but it works for me. You have to decide what works best for you. I keep a file in my head that contains all the bits of writing I do. For example: I have the ending for the last book of my series tucked away in my little brain waiting for me to write it. Some people find outlines and notes help them keep their characters and plots in order. You do what works for you.
For me writing a scene works best if I can see it. In other words, try to vision the scene as it is happening. If you have a clear picture so will your readers. Don't just throw up some meaningless description, make your reader see what you do and know when you've given them enough of a description.
Keep a dictionary and thesaurus handy. They are valuable tools in writing. I use a free one called WordWeb that works as both.
Don't use words a character wouldn't say. If you want to use some fancy word then your character should be the type who would say it.
I hate rewriting and avoid it by getting the scene right in the first place. Write it, check it over and change what needs changing.
Having talent for writing helps but you can learn to write a decent story.

I have two books in a series published and working on the third one. I also have plans to put out a book of short stories. You can look me up on Amazon. The books I have out currently are Kickshaw Candies and The Plague Son. My avatar here is the cover for The Plague Son.

I agree with dictionary and thesaurus are great way to express things. Here's a link that might best describe your fantasy novels and other genres.
