I Saved a Mole

My dog was digging at the foundation of the house and I was on the other side also digging (in a different way) when he started running around me. I wondered what was going on and stood up. Then a big mole darted out from under where I was kneeling and the dog went after it. I held him back because though I encourage the hunt the thing reminded me of a guinea pig pet I had once, and it's bad for dogs to eat moles. Anyhow, the bigger reason was that the mole came to me for help, and I wasn't going to let it down. So I distracting the dog, I grabbed the bucket I was using for sod pieces and flipped the mole into it. After that the dog was distracted by other things (trying to find where the mole went). Later I released the mole back into the wild and by then it had recovered enough that it ran away.

Well done, @jaboUK moles are a protected species here in Switzerland, you cannot kill them. I am glad that I have none in the garden, but the one across the brook, in front of our house, has a serious mole problem.

@jaboUK Yes they are, because, at a difference of what we think, they are not rodents, they eat insects, warms, slugs and other pests. At most we can capture them alive.

@LadyDuck Yes, I understand that they do a lot of good, but try telling that to someone whose lawn has been ruined by unsightly molehills

@ladyDuck They are protected? Goodness - we even have molecatchers in England, they are pest control officers.

@Jessicalynnt Moles can be extremely fast when they want to be. Like little rockets.

A good thing that you are there as a savior. It is a good deed for caring an animal.

If you had a nice lawn you might not think so kindly towards moles. I'm glad that you rescued him.

My lawn is full of weeds. And there are lots of fields for it to go crazy in as well! While it was scared I pet its head a few times with my gloved fingers. It was all slicked with moisture at that time. I guess the dog had it a few times. When it ran away at the end it was completely dry again.

You also saved your dog from being sick by saving the mole.

Yes, mole's aren't healthy for dogs to eat. Of course, I kept it in the bucket long enough that the dog forgot about it.

The title was amusing...... Good to hear that you saved the mole and the dog by preventing him from eating it...

Most people wouldn't have compassion for moles, but I seem to have a history of being kind to them. One winter a mole found comfort by curling up on my boot for extra warmth. After about a minute it could continue its journey.

@Daljinder I was surprised that it was even out of its burrow, so I was fine with it getting some comfort from the cold. The one I saw yesterday was quite large for all the moles I've seen. I'm glad it recovered.
