Most Interesting Way I've Ever Learned I've Been Fired

If you're young and just looking for a first job, let me give you some advice to keep in the back of your mind: you ARE going to get fired. We've all faced that terrible fact of life: the office is downsizing and you're expendable all of the sudden; the boss has a relative who needs a job (like Don Fanucci in The Godfather Part II) and you're the unlucky person who has to go, or whatever. Don't take it personally, it's going to happen. I've had a number of jobs lost to one reason or another (most of which were listed above). Given that I have several health issues, a number of those lost jobs have been due to time missed. I understand that. I'm thankful that I have things to fall back on so I don't have to make the decision of "work or my health." Today I discovered that my current job is history. I found out in unquestionably the most interesting manner in which I've ever learned about a dismissal. I've worked at temp agencies off and on for the past 30 years. I'm still signed up with a temp agency, although I wasn't able to work much from them last year because of a broken ankle and several bouts of bronchitis. However, one of the jobs they did send me on was as a data entry clerk at the place I am now employed. That's how my employer found me: they were impressed with my work and offered me a full-time job. Today the temp agency called and asked if I wanted to work a one-day assignment....at the place I'm currently working. I had to miss all of Monday because of the fiasco at the VA hospital, and I had to leave early today for another VA appointment (and I have a third tomorrow afternoon, and yet another appointment on Tuesday). Apparently the owner of the business (it's a very small office) has said "enough" and called the temp agency to find a replacement for me. Little did he know that the replacement the temp agency would pick for me would be....ME!!!! I understand their predicament. I'm not bitter or angry. I'll take a bag to work tomorrow so I can clean my desk out. Once I get my medical issues sorted out at the VA I'll go back to the temp agency. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the laugh.

This is awful. How can they fire you without even giving you a proper intimation?Thats totally unprofessional.

With this kind of treatment, I would never have second thought. I will quit especially if they really need my service. I've done this before. They gave me a lot of accusations and started to scrutinize my job. At the end, I found out they wanted the system done in a department and personal intention, they wanted my position. Without any thinking, I resigned and put passwords to all my documents. So no one will going to steal my intellectual properties.

There are really bad employers who doesnt care about you until they realized they need you more than themselves.

That is pretty funny. I've only been fired once and they had to rehired me with a raise. I stayed a month and quit. LOL

How funny! I was fired once very nicely and it was because it just wasn't for me. A selling job basically and I am no salesperson. I tried it for three months and the out come was unanimous. I wanted to go. Never would have found the one that turned out to be my final job. I got a early retirement there with a life long pension after only being there five years.

That is funny, but are you sure they're not wanting to add another employee to the roster, or possibly not firing you, but just finding a temporary replacement until you're there again on a regular basis? I'm curious how this panned out for you.
