Is there a Link between Happiness and Aging?

Not really. We can stay happy at any age. Happiness has very little to do with aging. It has much to do with our attitude and responses towards aging. It has been found that generally older people do not react as sharply to life's adverse events despite their failing health. Those who demonstrate greater resilience to life’s setbacks and accept these cheerfully, tend to experience lesser negative emotions and stay happier for longer periods of time. This could account for many elderlies retaining the happiness quotient even as they advance in years. The important thing is to adopt an easy-going positive attitude. Looking on the bright side of every situation is a great mood enhancer. Factors that do add up to a happy life have nothing to do with outward superficial circumstances like a bigger home, winning a lotto or amassing substantial wealth. Rather, it has everything to do with one’s ‘inner’ strength and spirit of resilience.

Aging has many benefits and embracing these and not focusing on the negative goes a long way toward being happy.

You have absolutely hit the nail on the head. Negativity can bring you down- - not only in health, but also in all other aspects of your life. Thanks @bellestarr

Aging process should be enjoyed and not to feel weary about it. My grandmother is at 98 right now. She enjoys her aging process.

@Gabugs Thank you. She is running 99 this year. We are really lucky to have her. She had even seen her great grandchildren.

You are fully right, unfortunately many times when people age they become depressive and pessimist.

Well, that's a natural human phenomenon @ladyduck It happens especially when we are ill and suffering from a chronic disease or lonely. But we could all try to overcome the negativity in our lives.

Nicely said. Change what we can for the better and accept those we can't - is a motto that I like to follow - siva

I echoed the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Wise words indeed - siva
