Insurance for a Rental

This weekend - We rented a U-Haul Cargo Van (last minute) to move some furniture and boy did I not expect U-Haul to be quite pricey. The U-Haul Cargo Van is $19.95 plus an additional 59 cents per mileage - valid for 24 hours. Whereas, if I had known we needed to rent a Cargo Van, I could have rented at other companies all day for probably $75 with unlimited mileage. We ended up using 80 miles and after gas, we spent like $100 bucks. That was the cheapest option, if you wanted a bigger U-Haul Truck the price increases for the rental fee and per milage rates increased. Knowing we are charged by mileage it was intimidating. Also, the "insurance" part. You have an option to buy insurance through U-Haul and pay $10. If anything happens you won't be liable OR, if you don't buy the insurance, and something happens (accidents, or to the car, etc) you have to pay $25,000 out front. Although we know our insurance covers rental insurance, we chose to buy the $10 insurance anyway (even though we knew we would most likely not need it.) When it comes to rentals? Do you ever give in on buying their insurances? Especially if it's $10 compared to $25,000 - I will buy it just encase. But if it is an unreasonable amount, we usually don't because we verify with our car insurance prior.

I've rented a load of cars and trucks over the years. I've never gone for the extra insurance options and so far I've been lucky. Insurance is a gamble...I gamble on never getting into a smash and have been lucky so far. If i'd have crashed then maybe i would have lost out if the crash was my fault. I've had one big crash and that was outside prague and it wasn't my fault.

I would rather be safe than sorry and pay the insurance.

Of course, we have no intentions of crashing but the cargo van was pretty big compared to the cars we regularly drive, so for $10 bucks it was worth it, lol. For regular sized cars, we never go with the insurance since our insurance already covers car rentals.

That is a big gamble to take, especially when driving in countries you are not familiar with. It's lucky you've only had the one incident. I don't think I could trust the other drivers myself though.

I used to always get the rental insurance. I found out my regular car insurance paid for rentals so I quit. I do, however, always call them when I know I am going to rent to verify they still cover rentals.

@infatuatedbby ...I just checked each time to be sure they hadn't changed what they covered.

Yes, I agree! Usually our insurance companies also cover rental insurance. But, since it was $10, we mind as well bought it.

I think that is wise. it will save the hassle of going through a claim process since they will submit all the paperwork on your behalf.

I agree - Even though we were really careful, we cannot predict the future. Better safe than sorry.

We prefer to pay the rental car insurance, because you can never know what can happen.

Yes I agree. Especially since it was a small fee of $10. If it was something outrageous like $50-100, no thanks.

$10 is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I'd buy the insurance

Agreed! Not expensive and worth it for $10.

Our insurance would cover rentals, if we ever needed to rent anything.

Same here, but we thought $10 would be worth it and less hassle if something was to happen.

@infatuatedbby $10 is so little, it's worth it.

That sounds about what we paid several years ago. We rented a U-haul several years ago to move my exes great grandmother's belongings to a storage building. Technically it was all items we were to keep and use. I think everything was later given away (after we split). I don't remember if we used the insurance or not. We never traveled very far. The rental place and storage place we used were only about ten minutes from the house we were cleaning out. I would rather be safe than sorry, so I'd more than likely buy the insurance now.

I always see U-Hauls driving around with the big $19.95, $29.95 but I never read the fine print. First time and probably the last time. I don't like to feel rushed when it's by milage I agree, the insurance is better safe than sorry especially if it isn't expensive. For $10 bucks versus if something does happen, $25,000 - no thanks! Especially since a few days ago, in the neighborhood a trucks 4 wheels/tires went missing. I wouldn't want to risk that happening or a stolen U-Haul either, lol.

Yes, I believe if it is reasonable priced like $10 - We bought it also. I am not paying $25,000 for any damages!! Lol.

Thank goodness we don't need to do that but if we did paying the $10 makes sense.

Our insurance provider tells us we are covered, so we don't buy their insurance.

True, but I didn't want to deal with insurance so I just paid the $10. If it was more, I wouldn't.

I've never rented a U-Haul truck but we do pay movers to move our stuff for us. The cargo van does sound like a wiser option - good lesson learned there. I also agree with purchasing the insurance.

I never moved. Just had to move some furniture only haha. But the cargo van was an easier option to drive and we didn't need that big of a truck for household items. That insurance was reasonably priced.
