Flags at Half-Mast

All throughout the day I kept passing flags that were flying at half-mast. I kept scratching my head and wondering why they were lowered, and who it was in honor of? I've been so busy at work with a renovation project that I haven't been focused on the news. Everyone I asked couldn't tell me the answer, which was sad that we were honoring the death of someone and it seemed to be unimportant or unknown to most people. Then it hit me! Duh! The flags were at half-mast in honor of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Scalia! How could so many people (myself included) not know this? I feel horrible that I haven't been keeping up with the news lately, and that I missed the news of Scalia's passing.

Because of the rain this morning, we didn't even raise the flag at school so I hadn't been aware they were being flown at half-staff, though I can understand why we would. Justice Scalia's passing sure has set the left and right into full rhetorical battle stations. It will make this election year all the more contentious.

I already thought this was going to be a brutal election season, and now I fear it is only going to get worse. I think we are going to see some nasty politics going on in Washington. And meanwhile the citizens continue to grow more weary of Washington...

@moffittjc If everyone would join my D.R.A.I.N. movement, changes would have to happen in Washington. PS: D.R.A.I.N. stands for Don't Re-elect Anyone In November.

@DWDavis If you think about the mess going on in Washington, we have nobody to blame but ourselves. We keep crying that we want change, but we keep electing the same boneheads over and over to office. Maybe we are getting exactly what we deserve as a nation.

@moffittjc You work extremely hard. That or you have once again almost killed yourself ( ) so it isn't your fault it slipped your mind.

It was clearly the result of me being extremely busy in this instance! When I get super busy at work, I tend to not pay attention to the news!

I have read the news about Scalia passing, I did not know that the flags were at half mast for him.

@moffittjc I suppose that this is a decision of your President.

@LadyDuck I wonder what the official "rules" are for declaring flags to be lowered to half-mast? I've only known the President to have the power to order them lowered. I wonder if it is an official responsibility of the President, or if it's an implied power he/she has?

I didn't realize we lowered the flags for Supreme Court Justices. I guess it's at the President's discretion as to whom we honor.

Oh ! He is honoured by doing it. I think he must be a great personality.

How were you spared the cat fight (which began before the man was cold) over the nomination of his successor? I'm envious.

Well I'm seeing and hearing about it now! I think I may have been better off staying clueless and uninformed.

@msiduri ...and there aren't enough baby bottles to shove in all their mouths! Our broken political system in Washington absolutely disgusts me!

@moffittjc Sadly, this is going to be going for a while. I feel like popping baby bottle in everyone's mouth and giving every a time out but there aren't enough corners.

Well, considering how nasty it's going to get in Washington as both political parties fight it out to nominate his replacement, I think I was much better off NOT knowing what was going on!
