on the news here.a teacher was suspend for taking the candy away of one of her student. While she was teaching and told the person stop eating the candy. He did not as she went over to take the candy away . Now she is being charge with the assault . I do not think that this is right. She had a right to tell that student. But like always.Come to Mama or Papa for this. They are the one who is responsible for all of this. What is your take on this?

It seems a lot of children have no respect for authority today. She should not be charged for taking the candy away

Without knowing the whole story it's difficult to comment, but as an educator it really irks me that kids these days know they just have to utter one word and the career and reputation of an innocent adult is in their control. *sigh*

It same way with parents. If a child doesn't like the discipline he is receiving however mild it may be all he has to do is call the abuse hotline whose number is readily available.

How in the world is taking a bag of candy away from a student assaulting them. Sometimes I think that the news makes things out to look much worse then it is or don't tell the whole story to get people in an outrage. If she hit the child or something then that is assault but taking a bad away is simply not! Candy is not allowed in classrooms so it is the students fault for not listening. I agree the candy should have been taken away. I do not think the child should have been hurt if that is really what wound up happening that hasn't been fully reported.

@Elizaby I think the parents have to teach manners and respect for authority figures and their elders at home! There is discipline in the schools. Schools are for teaching and learning. I had one mother who wanted me to teach her 4th grade son how to brush his teeth!!!! Grrrr

Students and teachers need to go back to the way it was when I was in school. Then it was against school policy to chew gum in class. Teachers should be allowed to teach and parents should keep their noses out of what doesn't concern them in the classroom. Now if the student was carrying a weapon, that's another matter.

Back when I was in school candy or gum wasn't allowed to be consumed in the classroom and the teacher had the right to take it away or have the student throw it in the trash and unless the teacher did something else this is wrong. But discipline is being taken out of the schools and look what is happening as without the "ear" of receiving discipline for wrong actions our schools are failing in the world.

assault could only apply if the student was holding the candy and got physically separated from it possibly with some force - clearly the student was in the wrong and being wilfully defiant of the teacher's valid use of authority at least initially

The parents should back up the teacher. A child does not need to eat candy during class

I do not know what to say, this is was the common practice when I went to school. If the teacher noticed someone eating during the lesson, what we were eating was confiscated.

@amadeo Yes, that was the usual practice back in time. Do you remember how many gums where stuck under the school desks?

Having been a teacher, I know that sometimes you have to take something, like candy, away. That's crazy she'd be charged for something like that!

Some parents are just far too stupid to have kids in the first place. They should be backing the teacher but then there is probably little discipline at home either!
