Arsonist Arrested at Last

The news here today is that a local SES (State Emergency Service) and fire fighter volunteer has been arrested and charged with deliberately lighting fires on our area in south-west Western Australia. Back around Christmas time there were two major fires in our area. One was too close for comfort and I wrote about it here: http://new.mylot.com/post/2877239/the-photo-albums-are-by-the-door. So today a 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged. Arsonists cause so much damage and heartache. It is hard to feel sorry for him but I feel for his family, especially if he is married with young children. His folks will be devastated and I can't imagine what his friends are thinking. But until the next time we can rest easy for a while.

What an awful thing to do. It makes it worse that he is a firefighter, as he has seen at first hand the devastation that fire can cause.

Pyromaniacs go into firefighting for the same reason pedophiles work with children.

@Marty1 It's an addiction like all the rest. They really cannot help it. This should have been discovered when he took the test to become a firefighter.

Surely he has to be mentally unwell. What else could explain such actions?

@JudyEv Fires scare me...There was a field fire across the road from us a fwe years ago and it went up so fast and the wind was blowing this direction. The vol. fire dep.t isn't that fast around here but they did finally get it out.

The last one resulted in a lot of damage and expense. It was lucky there was no-one killed.

@AbbyGreenhill It is unbelievable how fast a fire can travel. It also seems to generate its own power and speed too.

bizarre that a fireman would start fires - glad he has been caught

Apparently it isn't uncommon for fire-fighters to be arsonists.

He was a volunteer huh? That is very strange, but I am glad they caught him. Arson is a terrible sickness.

It is a sickness but it is hard to feel sorry for him. I hope he doesn't have a young family of his own.

I don't understand why someone would do this. I know that it has to do with some kind of fascination with fire but to risk so many lives and property is beyond my understanding.

@JudyEv I would have to agree with you. Like you, I don't know what else it could be for someone to do that.

Surely it has to be mental health issue. Nothing else explains it.

I hope they arrested the real culprit and if so, he deserved to be punished nonetheless. What he did is really bad.

It is a terrible thing to do and can result in a lot of damage and even loss of life. He is out on bail but is sure to go to jail.

I guess the fire fighter wanted to be seen as a hero, so invented his own act of heroism.

@JudyEv There were a few US arson fires which turned out to be fire fighters.

It seems to be the mindset of many of these people. They like the kudos that goes with fire-fighting.

There was at least one fireman in the U.S. that did the same thing, years ago. Disgusting!

I think the fire crews are the first to be investigated when there is an arsonist on the loose.

It seems that often these fires can be started by reserve firemen. I hope that they throw the book at him for endangering lives. There are some terrible fires in Australia and I believe in America too!

We live in an area called Argyle. There are volunteer brigades about every ten kms or so I guess - Donnybrook, Argyle, Lowden, Mumballup, etc. The arsonist was from our Argyle group and only got married in January so it's all very sad. Certainly the fires he lit could have been much more catastrophic than they were we we were lucky in that respect. He is bound to go to jail.

What is reason behind it to lead the fire fighter to a fire maker?

I wonder is psychiatrists know why people do this sort of thing. What in their childhood turned them into pyromaniacs?

It would be interesting to know. I've known young kids who love playing with matches so the signs start at a young age.

It is hard to feel sorry for someone doing the damage done. The family must be really upset about this.

I'm glad he has been caught... as that means he can not do it again... but like you I do 'feel' for him and his family... what would drive a young man like that... to do such a thing... so sad.....

I think his colleagues who are fire fighters themselves would be feeling even worse and betrayed. Since they fight so bravely to protect lives from such fires.
