They've been evicted at last!

My husband and I discussed the matter at length yesterday, and came to the conclusion that they would have to leave today. Of course, they weren't going to go willingly, so last night we got what we'd need to encourage them to go on their merry way. This morning, I shut down my desktop, unhooked all of the cables, took off the side panel, and marched it (and them) outside. Boy, did those dust bunnies go flying when I blasted them with the compressed air! But now my PC tower is clean and free of dust bunnies, and I even took a few minutes to swap out a pair of the factory RAM sticks for the brand new upgrades I bought yesterday. Now I shouldn't have to deal with my web browser freezing up on me so much when I'm trying to post on myLot. Do you consider cleaning out your computer's interior part of spring cleaning?

I wouldn't dare do anything like that as I'd be afraid I couldn't put it back together again.

I've been taking these things apart since I was a preteen... it's all routine at this point.

@yukimori I'm very technologically challenged - I'd never even touched a computer till just over two years ago when I was already well into my 70s.

Wow, you must be techy savvy . . . I don't dare do that stuff as Hubby does it. I am pretty sure if I took the time to disassemble all of it myself, I can put it back together too - but - I just don't. But other than that, I wouldn't know what to touch or not touch (again, if I researched it, I probably can - but I just don't). I only do the surface cleaning !

@yukimori Oh, ok, I think that I can handle (but still won't ). I suppose I should clean the surrounding areas a bit better though . . . not good when the tower is removed and you are left with a clean spot where the dust bunnies did not get to !

To be technical, I didn't really disassemble anything this time around. I just pulled the side panel off--not very complicated, there's just a couple of screws attaching it to the back and it just slides right off once those are removed. No touching anything (aside from a stubborn dust bunny that wedged itself next to the power supply and wouldn't move)... just point the can of air and spray.

I don't do it for fear that I'd mess up the inside parts somehow... but I remember a friend was trying to fix my PC some time ago and I was so embarrassed when he found it's so dusty in there - "no wonder it's not working", he joked...

As long as you're not touching the parts directly, there shouldn't be any concern. I always use an anti-static wrist strap just in case, though. It's surprising how much of an effect all that dust can actually have on the system performance. It really does make a difference!

That compressed air domeoflatchy stuff only creates more static which isn't good for the puters so I'll have to find another way butt I really should get it done soon, we're already getting into the windy part of the season witch gets all that babypowder dust blowin round and boy is it impossible to keep outta the house. I live in a dry desert so we can't do what folks in the more humid areas can

Thanks for that tip @yukimori I need to dig up my shop vac and see if I can get the dust to dislodge.

It's generally only an issue when the air is moving at high speeds, but I use an anti-static wrist strap, too. I've seen it suggested to use a shop vac on the reverse setting so it's blowing rather than sucking, possibly with a homemade paper end attached to it instead of a plastic attachment. The paper's less likely to generate static than the plastic is. I know just what you mean about the baby powder dust... we don't get it around here, but it's all over the place where my parents live. It's one of the main reasons I don't have any desire to move to their area.

I only have a lil chromebook Yuki so no need for big cleaning. I keep it dust free constantly. It is only 11 inch screen. I am glad you got the dust bunnies out. I am sure your new upgrades will help you myLot.

All you really have to do is take off the side (or bottom panels, for a laptop) and spray it with compressed air to blow the dust (and bunnies) out of there. I'd left mine so long this time that it took the entire can of air to clean it out this morning.

Great post! You had me fooled. I was trying to work out why you'd be shutting down etc and next sentence - way go the dust bunnies. I'm still smiling.

I cannot put it together again on my own. My husband is good at fixing things. Good that your PC is clean!
