Today the international schools in the Kanto Plains had their instrumental Solo Ensemble Festival. Student musicians played solos or small groups and were adjudicated. We had piano, strings, brass and woodwind players from grades 6-12 from about 12 different schools. It's a great experience for them (though sometimes a bit traumatic if they don't perform as well as they wanted to.)
Scores are given on an individual basis so the students are not competing against each other. They get scores on things like tone quality, intonation, and musicality. 5 is the best. There are 6 categories so a perfect score would be 30. Most kids get a 3 or 4 on most categories.
Did you have such festivals where you grew up? I found a box of all my medals from my childhood festivals in my mom's house when we cleared it out. Good memories!
