This afternoon my husband and I drove to a nearby town. We eventually bought a coffee and chose to go to the park / playground close to the shopping centre, where we sat under a large tree enjoying our coffee. It was great to see so many young families with children out and about, using the playground equipment and enjoying the open spaces of the park. We sat there for quite a while, enjoying the moment, drinking our coffee and watching the interaction between the parents and their children. There is so much criticism these days of how children spend their time, but these kids were definitely enjoying being out in the open air, enjoying the open space and the challenges the playground equipment was offering them.

I'm glad they were having so much fun. I'm constantly surprised by how empty the parks look. It never looked that way when I was a kid.

We say the same about community swimming pools. I guess parks are one of the few things families can do for free

@valmnz That's true. I see so few people - kids and families - taking advantage of parks and outdoor recreation. Technology has destroyed that for kids.

@just4him we're lucky in NZ that we have a more outdoor type of culture.

It is something that more children and families should do. I love watching the interaction too!!

These are the lucky kids. The unlucky ones probably have to stay home all day long because their parents are too lazy to bring them out.

Once in a while - it is nice to go to the park and it's also nice to see kids enjoying themselves at the park instead of sitting behind the computer or playing on their electronics these days.

We are lucky in New Zealand that most families still place a lot of value of spending time outdoors with their kids.

It can be nice to see the interaction. I enjoy taking my kids to the park. They have fun playing there, and I enjoy taking them. Although I haven't taken them much lately. With the snow and the cold it's not always easy. But I really do look forward to taking them again, when spring comes and it starts to get warmer.

I always took my kids(one daughter and two grandchildren) to the park. Nice time for us to swing together and have some nice quiet time together. Good that folks are doing things together. And it doesn't cost anything but gas to get there and ice cream ater. LOL

The kids here spend a lot of time outside. Now it's cold, but as the days will be warmer you can see them in the playgrounds and also playing in private gardens.

I have a feeling where there were children, there have been people to complain about their activities, lol!

It's noticable here in spain too, there are a lot of childrens play areas and other social areas, and they are well used, like you say, the parents are with the children, talking and playing with them. I think our climate has a lot to do with it, it is ideal for playing outside, but it's nice to see the parents out and playing with them too.....

The playground in our town gets a lot of use. There are also many who are involved in sports of all kind. It's not all bad news as far as children are concerned.
