The world is gray

I don't mean that our world is colorless and boring, not at all. I'm talking about people who see things in black and white, vs people who see both sides of things. Example: a former co-worker of mine would constantly talk about the people at the workplace that he disliked, one because he was lazy, another because he stole people's ideas and took credit for them, another because they butted heads over ideas. He flat out called those people evil, and wouldn't hear anything positive about them. I pointed out that the lazy guy was actually quite good at project management, and had a nice personality. I just didn't think he belonged in an analyst position. Oh, this sent my co-worker through the roof. You don't say something nice about somebody who has not-so nice qualities, apparently. Are you a black and white person or a gray person?

I try to look at things objectively. And I'm willing to change my views as I take in more information. I suppose I'm more of a grey.

Now being willing to change your views is rare, I think. It's hard to do when you learn something that contrasts with an absolute that you were taught to believe.

@TheHorse I've heard it called cognitive dissonance

@dawnald Yeah, the psychologists call it cognitive conservatism or confirmation bias. For many, it's difficult to change their views, even in the face of dis-confirming evidence.

Reminds me of my mom. The only thing she notices in me are all of my mistakes but she ignores all the great things I achieve. She will see me as the blacksheep no matter what.

I don't beleive I see people in black and white and I really do not like it when one person talks trask about another person because we all have good and bad points. I generally stay away from people who talk about others in a negative way.

We aren't friends any more, and that is the main reason. :-)

I am clearly a purple person. The worst person in the world has at least one positive quality, and the best person in the world has at least one negative quality. Nobody is all good or all evil. I might not necessarily see or acknowledge the positive qualities in the people that I really can't stand, but that does not mean that they do not exist. If they are brought to my attention, though, then I can objectively look at them and acknowledge them.

I see in living color. I try to see good in everyone even if they aren't my favorite person. Does that make me gray? Don't really understand it.

I think it just means shades of gray, ie everything isn't black or white. But I like that you see in color, that is even better. :-)
