Yoga and a Running Setback

February 28, 2016 5:32pm CST
I've been training for a 5K. I started running in January to prepare for a race in May. The progress had made me feel pretty good about myself. I was up to running over two miles and 30 minutes straight which wasn't too shabby considering how long it had been since I had run regularly. Then 8 days ago, I ran outside at the park for the first time. Until Saturday, I had been training on the treadmill at my gym. It's quite different running on pavement. The unexpected happened. I awoke on Sunday, 7 days ago, to a terrible ache in my shins! SHIN SPLINTS!!!!! Argh! You've got to be kidding! Sooooo.... I had to take a few days off to let my shins heal. I also started doing some exercises meant to strengthen the shin and decided to try different shoes. After a few days off, I ran for a mere ten minutes a couple days ago. It felt ok. Then, a little tummy bug hit the house. And I had to miss a couple more days. Today, I made it back to the gym for both yoga and running. I ran ten minutes, walked 2, then ran another 4, then I was done. I feel a bit like I am starting over. I suppose setbacks happen to all athletes, but it is quite disappointing. Additionally, my shoulder is bugging me during yoga again. My doctor seems to think I have arthritis in one joint. Sigh. Thankfully, that doesn't mean I must stop doing yoga, but it does mean there is an ache throughout. I'll eventually get another cortisone injection, I'm sure. I'm feeling a bit discouraged today. Do you ever get discouraged?

We all do I am sure. My part-time work schedule was interfering with yoga and my ping pong games, but since it is slow now, I am only working one day a week for March. I know I will be discouraged about the loss of a lot of flexibility. A 5K is ambitious!

I haven't been working at all, darn it. I hear it will pick back up in March. I'm probably too busy to work anyway right now. But I miss the income! yes, it's amazing how quickly we lose our progress

@jillybean1222 Oh yes, that income will be missed. I made about $500 since I worked so much in the first two weeks of February, then things slowed down.

Yes, my physical condition has really gone downhill in the last few years. I hope to do better in the upcoming year.

Then maybe you must try some other styles of doing your yoga , if that one hurts shoulder and shin .

the running hurts my shins, not the yoga. my dr thinks i just have arthritis in one joint. so i'm continuing the yoga

I do, as you get older and realize that your body just can't function like it did before it does get very discouraging but we do adjust to our new reality with time.

I've always wanted to do a 5K & was so proud of myself for getting in shape for it. This whole ache/pain thing is really depressing me

I get disappointed when think I'm softball ready for the Spring and then feel a cramp in my calf or a little twinge in my hammy. Can you run on dirt, not pavement, while you're training?

I'm keeping at it! At least, I think I'm in a different place now where I am not going to give up altogether.

Well sorry to hear you had some setbacks and have to start over again. Atleast your able to get back into it though and not quit. Good luck and I hope you can get back to where you were before this 5k starts in may.

You are simply amazing Jilly! I admire you. I am and never could be a runner. I dont know about shin splints, what are they? I remember walking a lot and getting very sore shins. I hope you are better soon dear friend.

That's too bad about the injury, try not to let it get you down. I take 12 prescribed pills a day, I could easily let it get me down, but then what fun would I be? I'm sure that doing the yoga will be of benefit to you with arthritis.

I think we all get discouraged now and them, but we just have to keep moving forward....hang in there.

That's a shame that you've had these setbacks. Hopefully you will bounce back as you have so many times before.
