Cold or allergies?

Oh dear, my nose has been running since yesterday, but otherwise I don't feel bad.
I am getting on an airplane to go see my mother in hospital, tomorrow. I really hope this is just allergies. The weather report says the pollen season has started so maybe that is it. I don't feel bad otherwise.
If it is a cold, I'm not sure I should visit my mother in the hospital and give her and the other patients my cold!
How do you tell whether you are catching a cold or have allergies?

Better to see the doctor so you can get proper medications and diagnosis. Get well.

I think it is important to visit your mother as well. If its colds then you just take the necessary precaution so you wont infect others like wearing a facemask and doing handwasing before you touch your mother and after. Also, you should avoid sneezing in a public area. I do hope its just an allergy and that you get well soon.

That is what I would do in Japan, but I'm trying to think how Americans would view me wearing a mask!

It's hard to tell for anyone. If you have clear snow it's safe to say your not sick. If it's any color of snot you got some kind of virus.

For me it was kinda difficult to tell at first, like I seemed to be getting colds ALL the time, and then I was talking to my dr. and he said oh why don't we get you allergy tested? Well after that I started getting allergy shots and then...well, I started getting less sick. The thing was if that wasn't suggested I don't think I would have realized it, because it seemed like a cold...like, it wasn't just something that felt like hayfever, but a cold or being sick. Mmmm, it just turned out that I was allergic to lots and lots of stuff:)

I don't know how you tell but I guess if it's SEEMS like allergies hopefully it is. With a cold I guess you'd feel more miserable perhaps. It's a problem, isn't it? Whether or not to go to a hospital. I suppose you could always wear a mask but that might freak out your mother - and everyone else.

Allergies can make you feel miserable. I hope that is all you have and not a cold, so you will be able to visit your mother.
Sometimes it is hard to tell which it is. I always think if the mucus is clear it is just allergies.
