Beatrix Potter's fictional bunny appears on a brand-new 50 pence piece released in Britain.
It will become the first children's literary figure to appear on a UK coin.
The other side of each coin features Queen Elizabeth II.
There will be 3 more coins coming out in the following months.
What a nice tribute to Beatrix Potter and Queen Elizabeth II.

It seems that the coin illustrated will only be issued as an uncirculated collector's item. I believe that it is legal tender (all commemorative coins are) but only a fool would use it as currency, since the cupro-nickel version will cost £10 to buy! There is also a silver proof version which will cost a great deal more, of course.
As far as I know, it's the first time a colour image has been included on any coin and I can't find any information on how it has been achieved - whether it's an enamel or a plastic process.
There is a Beatrix Potter commemorative 50p coin which will be released for circulation but it doesn't have Peter Rabbit's portrait on it in colour. It has the words "Beatrix Potter" and a small image of a rabbit running underneath.
The Queen's head has, of course, appeared on the obverse of ALL coins issued since 1952.

I agree. What a nice tribute. This is for a commemorative coin collection though, right?

It is a really nice way for a tribute. That was my understanding that it is a commemorative coin.
