My Brother's Masteral Defense

Philippines
March 3, 2016 8:56pm CST
This thesis of his had been going on since before he had got married. Now, after so many years of delay here and there, he's finally going to have his final defense. I know he can pull it off against five people that were going to interrogate him for this thesis. There's just a problem though, were going to distribute food or lunch not just to his panel but also to twenty five students who will be watching the defense. I was like because we didn't have this in our defense before. But I won't be alone, a family friend of ours will be coming also to help.

How nerve wrecking. It's an important event for your brother and it's nice of you to show him your support. However, I've never heard of students preparing food for the panel and audience. Was it required by the university or something done out of good will? I'm sure your brother will be successful in his defense.

@cacay1 I don't know because that didn't happen when we had our defense. that's just too much for me, people shouldn't require other stuff besides their papers for the defense. well, not going since grandma got sick.

@cacay1 Oh dear, that's costly. In other countries, students do their doctorates for free and even get paid while doing it if they've earned a scholarship or done some research assisting/casual tutoring on the side. Of course, the students have to meet the faculty's competitive entry criteria (i.e. solid academic references, strong academic record, research experience, participation in academic conferences and publications in strong journals).

@cacay1 You're right, your country doesn't care about their researchers as much as money. It's sad.

I hope everything goes well with your brother“s defence. As for the food, I have never heard of such a thing and it is not used in my country.

@Letranknight2015 I would not be bribed with food. And I was a professor for years.
