Starting to think I have Misophonia....

I started a discussion ages ago about how I HATE the sounds of people chewing or gulping their drinks loudly. I really wasn't kidding when I said it irritates the crap out of me! Right at this moment my brother is eating and I can hear the annoying slurping, the smacking of the lips, the chewing AHHHH Then....the GULP GULP AHHH shut up! I've hated these sounds and a few other sounds ( such as loud yawns, loud foot steps, clearing the throat for a long time ) for as long as I can remember and I decided to do some research on it and I'm not saying I have this but it just sounds like I might have Misophonia which is hatred of sound. I don't get annoyed at all the sounds that are listed but some, yes. I read the symptoms and the ones that I can relate to are: Anxious, heart beating fast, uncomfortable, angry, and basically like I want to punch someone in the face. I also read that it can also relate to someone having OCD, to which I do have. So again, I'm not saying I HAVE Misophonia but it would never surprise me if I actually got told by a doctor that I have it. Have you heard of Misophonia? Does it sound like something you or someone you know has?

Yep, you do have the symptoms..... I don't like those sounds either but I can tolerate them. I do get startled easily by sudden or loud noises. My folks find it amusing. I am always the one to jump when this happens. I have to research it myself to respond to this topic. I found this.
Misophonia is a strong dislike or hatred of certain sounds. Learn more from WebMD about this unusual condition, from symptoms to treatment.

@Daljinder I honestly know that feeling. My ex knew I hated to be scared and he actually had pleasure in doing it multiple times a day and would laugh. I cried a few times because I was scared of him in general and it wasn't good. Sometimes people can be really horrible and play with your fears. He even played with one of my worst fears, which are knives. Wasn't a pleasant time.

Never...what I don't understand is from where this scientific community picks names like misophonia, agarophobia, claustrophobia, kleptomania, etc. Miso to me would mean mid section phonetically closer to mezzanine or something...so misophonia would be ...sounds from mid section of the body because of the phonia and not phobia. As to what you are experiencing, I would define it as gulpobhobia or chewophobia. Really...what names. No...I haven't faintest idea about anybody I know experiencing such a thing.

@pgiblett ...slurpophonia, munchophonia, slurpophobia, munchophobia...isn't it easy to identify what is what..but I think more than people being fragile, we have identified rare problems.

Slurp, slurp, munch, munch. I think there seems to be too much of this going around today, being affected by unread diseases I mean. People are too fragile these days.

That is a good point. You usual way LOL but still interesting. Kleptomania:- derived from the Ancient Greek words ???pt? (klepto) "to steal" and µa??a (mania) "mad desire, compulsion" Agoraphobia:- from Greek ?????, meaning "large public square/marketplace" and -f?ß?a, -phobia, meaning "fear" Claustrophobia:- comes from Latin claustrum "a shut in place" and Greek f?ß??, phóbos, "fear" Now I also wonder why nomenclature favored Greek and Latin words?? Ever wonder what the words we would be using if we used our National language and our mother tongue... I am finding it amusing....

Off topic: I think of that Japanese miso soup when I read Misophonia. On topic: I didn't know there was a name for that (I guess there is a name for everything these days). I know a lot of little kids who hate certain noises - but I don't know if kids are just ultra sensitive to sound when they are little. Me personally, I don't think that I get to the point of wanting to punch someone in the face over a noise, but I can get annoyed over certain sounds. Oh, I hate it when my friend gulps her drinks - I don't think she's aware that she does that but it does annoy the heck outta me!

@VivaLaDani13 Miso soup is a Japanese soup - fermented bean soup - often with tofu and seaweed. I grew up on and now my kids love it! I can't describe the taste exactly as it is unique - rather salty anyway. I don't get worked up over noise, but I will get super annoyed to the point of being upset over other things.

lol I've never had that soup. What is is exactly? Have you had it? Yeah I think it may vary from person to person. I wouldn't actually punch someone but the feeling inside is pretty intense. Like my heart beat really does go so fast because it annoys me so much.

"You are not alone" That is a quote from one of my favorite flicks, and looks apt here. Though I neither get Anxious nor my heart beats fast but yes (a BIG YES) I do feel uncomfortable, angry, and basically like I want to punch someone (why not the one doing it?) in the face. It is so gross and disgusting to keep hearing those sounds(? why not noises?) Oh, on another note.... Maybe we met earlier, honestly do not remember. But @Daljinder makes me feel that I know you since a while now. I must mention @Daljinder for trying to get me mere, and making me more interested in knowing about your discussions... Thanks dear DJ. I am now following the OP.

@Daljinder By OP I was referring to the Original Poster (VivaLaDani13). I cannot dare call names to her yet. I will have to wait until she starts experimenting on me, or we get closer to know each other... Calling Names reminds me, I have yet to find a name for you... I know you prefer being addressed as some Vampire but I am scared of using this one for you...

@VivaLaDani13 I feel uncomfortable, I am glad that my husband does not make sounds while eating. If some of my friends do this I explain my problem, after all it's a question of good manners not to make noises while eating.

I have not heard about Misophonia. Your discussion tells about it. Generally speaking I also do not like the sound of slurping, loud yawns, loud footsteps, someone clearing the throat with an unusual sound. These kind of sounds unnecessarily disturb us and we get distracted by these sounds.

@VivaLaDani13 I may be odd in not liking this, but I absolutely hate hearing a singer gulping for breath in the middle of a song. I also hate coughing and sneezing, and I know that's irrational as people don't do it on purpose.

I did not know that kind of irritation towards sounds had a name. Looks like most of us would have it in varying degrees. I can't stand the sound of people burping. Also I hate people who think its alright to fart loudly in the house with everyone sitting around them, just because they are old men. Not all do it. But I have seen enough number of men doing it. Strangely I have never seen (or should I say heard?!!) a woman do this.

lol I think women are just more private with those sorts of things. But yeah, I grew up with brothers so I understand the childish moments of them farting and then laughing about it.

Thanks for teaching me a new english vocabulary @VivaLaDani13 . Personally, I don't hate many of these sounds but there is one that I hate the most; that is when someone chew bubblegum, blow it and make it burst up with a popping sound.

Not someone who has it, but if there are people with a fear or resentment to loud noises, children with Asperger's often confused, but if I read something about it. It is difficult to explain to others what they do not know, invite them to investigate further. The Internet has many resources in this regard.
