Patience in art at it's finest

This art work has been hanging on our wall for years, nobody seems to notice or give very little attention to it, the subject is the famous Banaue Rice Terraces in the Mountain Province, Philippines. It's a common subject and no big deal right? Wrong cause it was made from a collage of hundreds if not thousands of common Philippine stamps My wife bought it framed for like 800 pesos or roughly 17 dollars from a friend who is a member of a stamp club, who bought it for a little bit more, she needed the money so we bought it. I'm a hobby artist and I would not make one even if you pay me a hundred dollars, It's really patience and doing art for art's sake, so shame on me So what do you think?

Wow that is a most unusual piece Louie. Yes painstaking art, something I would not have patience for. It must be worth something now.

I heard that the artist stopped making now, I guess for obvious reasons When I was younger I use to do portrait painting but relatives just ask for my work so I stopped doing it, i would rather be an art dealer haha...

@TiarasOceanView Paintings are not that popular now at least here in the Philippines with the coming of the digital age, young people seem to look at it as for oldies with crazy money to buy or even invest on them.

Oh, the stamps are not as a whole, are they? No wonder I can't really make out the stamps from the picture. That makes it even more impressive though...

It just looks like a common picture in the wall till I ask people going to my house to guess what it is made of, after a couple of misses, I ask them to go a little nearer, even so some still take time to figure out the medium that was used.

@louievill It does seem very hard to make out it was made of stamps even after we're told that it was.

@louievill That artist should be given an award! It is a very difficult way to produce such artwork!

yep, cut into many tiny pieces, what is interesting is how the artist got so manu stamps and separated the different colors

It is a very interesting picture. I wouldn't make a picture from stamps. I am a patient person but not that patient.

@velvet53 Me, I love this so much that I have no plans of reselling it. The one who made it is a genuine, real honest to goodness artist, not like me errr I'm more inclined to the business side of things lol!

Looks like a good piece and money well worth spent. Then again its hard to value such things.

In terms of value, it's not much cause the artist is unknown, but It's something I would keep and not sell, the enjoyment I get from it ( as a talking piece) especially when there are visitors is already worth all the money.

Yes it's beautiful, but it's a common subject, you go near it and it's like hundreds if not thousands of stamps, cut, color separated then pasted.,

@1hopefulman I have modest knowledge in art dealing especially Filipiniana,it's not that expensive but still it hangs on our wall simply because I like it and admire and respect the person who made it.

Not valuable in terms of money, valuable in terms of patience, hardwork and being a true artist

That's actually quite nice - and it would look great on MY dining area wall! I can totally appreciate that. Three times I have made 1000 folded paper cranes for weddings (and Hubby's birthday), arranged it and framed it. It's what people do on special occasions (Japanese, Hawaiians, and perhaps other Asian countries who do origami). I would love to see a super close-up of that painting!

@louievill Your stamp collage sounds quite impressive. It's nice you brought it out to show us - bring new life to its appreciation! Well I've been doing origami all my life - I think all my Japanese friends (of my generation anyway) grew up knowing how to do origami. Oh but I've seen those amazing 3D ones - I've rarely attempted those!!

oh so you do origami? That's a very interesting art, I saw a Japanese master on T.V. before and he's creations were very realistic looking. 1000 X 3 . I think special camera lens would be needed to take a close shot which I do not have. Up close you would see hundreds if not thousands of cut faces of Philippine heroes, stamp prices, and letters that once spelled Philippines.

You canot see it eve if you enlarge it, lol, not even if you are near it,, but close examination would. Reveal thousands of stamps cut in a confetti like manner with Philippines heroes and stamp price sticking out

I collected stamps when I was in grade school and my appreciation for them is still there, I wish I could give a clearer image but I do not have the camera nor the proper lens to do it as yet, will do when i have the capability

The brown and green color of the steps of the rice terraces ( some consider it the 8th wonder of the world) is made up of lots of stamps, so i would need special lens for you to see it

I did not know it too when I first saw it even at a very near distance if the owner had not told me, I was just " fine Rice Terraces" I did not think I would buy it cause it was just common subject and made from just some kind of colored paper.
