Feeling quite domesticated...

# 10 I'm sure it is not a big deal to many but this feeling is quite something for me... My son and I dropped my husband off at the airport last Friday. He'll be overseas on a business trip for a few weeks. When he's home, he spoils me so much by doing most of the cooking. It comes so naturally for him while for me cooking is like a nightmare... But when it becomes a must, I surprised myself of what I could do... Over the weekend, I made breakfast, lunch, and dinner for me and my family. They're nothing fancy nor too complicated, of course; and I had to dig out my recipe folder to find out what I was doing... But overall, it did not turn out so bad at all. The kids loved the pancakes and my version of all-American breakfast (toasts/scrambled eggs/sausages). They finished the chicken fried rice I made too. For dinner I made fettuccine carbonara and I even baked apple crumble for dessert! It was like a dream weekend - far from a nightmare that I dreaded at first. Luckily for me, my kids are old enough to realize they're back to reality comes work days. They know they can't expect me to do that every day and they're trained well enough by their father to cook for themselves. And if they don't feel like cooking either, oh well, I guess take outs will be our best friend for the next few weeks...

My husband does all the cooking. I don't mind cooking for myself but I've got out of the habit of catering for others.

You and I - we can be twins! And does Vince like to cook for a large party too? My husband does - the more people he has to cook for, the more it seems that he enjoys it... I just simply can't understand that!

@sishy7 And we must have married twins too! If I suggest having someone for a meal, he gets highly excited and talks of nothing but recipes for ages. The thought of having to cook for guests gives me palpitations.

@enlightenedpsych2 If I'm not mistaken, aren't you the owner of a catering business or something? If so, I have no doubt you'd be quite awesome around the kitchen.

Nooo... that's his specialty! He gets the fish fresh from the fish market really early in the morning and he knows how to clean/cut/prepare it from scratch. Me? I'd go to his friend's best sushi shop in town and buy me some ready-to-eat.

Now you're talkin @sishy7 I'm hungry for sashimi but all I have is smoked salmon, I guess that'll have to do for now.

Yeah, I can't see myself volunteering to cook willingly when it's not required.

I know I am... He enjoys it, so the task is not a burden to him. Many times I'd suggest a take out when he seemed busy at work, but he'd rather cook.

You sound as if you're a pretty good cook after all. A lot of it is practice.

@sishy7 I used to hate to cook and felt the burden was left too much to me. Now I find I am happy to do it and find it a creative outlet.

@sishy7 I don't know whether that is a blessing! But as long as you two are comfortable with it, it should be fine - siva

I remember you mentioned once that husband does the cooking. Well hey, you should give yourself a big hand for doing all that over the weekend - now you're a pro ! I say double the recipe next time you cook . . . then you can save the leftovers and heat up stuff on another night (takes care of one night anyway - but yah, take out is a whole lot simpler isn't it ?)!

@sishy7 Sometimes that does happen. If you keep the sauce and pasta separate, that seems to work better so it doesn't all mush together. I find that cream sauces doesn't always heat up the same - like alfredo. I used gluten free pasta the other day for a pasta salad - first day was great . . . the next day it got chewy.

I like your double up idea! The pasta was a success and it'd be easy to double up. Do you think it will still taste alright if I save pasta leftovers for a next meal or something?

Yes, he does. Oh, I did the cooking in the course of the weekend, not all of those at once, just one meal at a time... But you're right, that's still a lot of cooking for me.

It is just nice sometimes that others will do the work for you. As for the chores, good thing for you, your family will appreciate your efforts for sure.

I miss my husband a lot when he's away; on the other hand, him being away gives me some motivation to do more chores at home, especially to learn more about cooking.

Sounds like you mastered the kitchen over the weekend and prepared some very tasty meals. I taught my kids to cook so that they could be self-sufficient. My dad was old fashioned and could barely boil water when it came to kitchen duty. I think it's sexy when man knows his way around the kitchen

And I'm the only girl in my family yet I'm worst when it comes to cooking... Next is my youngest son, he does not seem to be interested in cooking either. His other brothers are happy to cook for themselves as needed.

That's good! Sometimes it really isn't as hard as we thought, is it? Sometimes I feel myself being spoiled as well. Though my husband and I always share the workload at home, I feel much more comfortable when he's around, as I can just tell him I don't feel like cooking today, so he will do the cooking. If he's not at home, then I have no choice but to do everything. I am glad that my children are fine with simple food, as I only know how to prepare simple meals for them.

Yes, I'm glad my kids are pretty flexible. Even though they're spoiled with their dad's home cooked meals when he's around, they don't mind the simple meals I come up with or the take outs that we have when he's not around to cook...

He actually thinks I can cook if I want to... Most of the time I don't want to and I can get away with it when he's around... I end up cooking only when I need to.

It took me a bit to try to figure out what the numbers mean, but it looks like you do a running count of how many posts per year here? My husband can cook which is good since I work a lot during meal times and have for over fifteen years. Even though he does cook, when he knows I have the day off he tends to wait to see what my plan for a meal is. Many times I don't have any plans made. My younger daughter can make some things, but if either her dad or I are home she asks us to do it for her. SHe's realized very recently that if she hopes to move out within a few years that she'll have to figure out cooking for herself.

It was; I'm glad because I hate throwing food away which may be unavoidable should my cooking turn out to be a disaster instead of a success...
