Dragonfly Or What?

A few years ago I went out to my garden to pick a few vegetables. Some of the beans and peas were ready to be picked and while I was in the garden I saw this bug wing as a matter of fact there were two of them. I have one pictured here as I wanted to get a fairly close up shot. I'm thinking it's a dragonfly wing. And if it is does anyone know do they shed their wings or what? I didn't see the dragonfly or any other bug that would have wings like this. It was quite the find and I love getting a really close look at them. I did measure the wing and it was 2 1/2 inches long. That's a pretty big wing.

At 2.5 inches, I can't think of any other insect than a dragonfly of some sort which would own this. It's such a beautiful thing, I would be almost inclined to have it framed! You have taken an excellent photo of it.

It's beautiful! Although I have lots of dragonflies in my yard, I never took the time to look that closely at their wings.

@fishtiger58 I've done that. Doodles, the cat, liked to sniff them. Lol!

Just sit out there with a stick in your hand. They will land and you can get a look. I don't think I have ever gone fishing without at least one dragonfly landing and sitting a spell on my fishing pole

@DianneN Totally awesome. Those dragonflies love that stuff to sit a while. Love that about them. I have gotten some amazing macro's of them that way.

I was going to suggest a lacewing until you said how big it is. Must be a dragonfly.

@fishtiger58 They are beneficial insects as they eat aphids.

@jaboUK Apparently we do have some species of lacewings here in Illinois. I can't recall ever seeing them though.

I am now pretty sure it's a dragonfly. To get such a close up is next to impossible when they are flying around. I was happy to find this in my garden.

@fishtiger58 That was my first thought, but knowing very little about the insect world, I kept quiet.

@just4him I do try to mention frequently that I take pictures, names of flowers and bugs, not so much. I am right there with you Valerie.

After some research I'm fairly confident that it is indeed a dragonfly wing.

That's amazing. I thought it was a sculpture or wood-carving or something till I read the post. It's amazing the detail a good lens can bring out.

I think it's a dragonfly as well, I did go look at some images of dragonfly wings, very similar. I was so excited when I found this in my garden. Thanks glad you like my shot.

I know that they shed their whole skin when they grow from nymph to adult, but I do not believe that they shed their wings. Every time I have seen one, they have transparent wings.

i'd agree with't belongin' to a dragonfly. sadly, they don't shed their wings 'n the wee creature no doubt perished. i love dragonflies 'n when the ponds up'n runnin' i'm blessed with many varieties, a buffet'f colorful blues, greens 'n fiery oranges to delight the sense's they flit 'bout 'n take rest.

Dragonflies are harmless. I often have them taking a rest on my fishing pole. I have gotten a ton of great pictures of them.
