It irritates me to see a dog chained up in a yard, what is the matter with people that they can't put up a fence so their dog can run and play. I see a lot of that around here and I want to get out of my car and take the dog home with me but since I can't all I can do is rant about it. I wonder how their owners would like be chained in a yard and experience what the dogs feel, I bet they would then put up a fence wouldn't you? Public Domain Picture

We never wanted a dog bt when I had all four of my cats. A stray wondered into my yard. Since the cats did not care and after we put up flyers and no one claimed him. We kept him. I nerver tied him up. He had the run of the yard.

@Hatley They should be fined for chaining up dogs or let someone fence them up. Dogs do need their feedom in a yard to wander and sniff.

@jstory07 That is what should be done and I am glad you cared enough to keep him and let him have the run of your yard.

In some places, you are required to chain your dog. In New York State, you have to chain your dog all winter if you live in deer country. As to the fenced yard, some dogs are escape artists. We always took our dog with us when we went away so she would not be alone.

If a dog goes after a deer how is that different then these hunters hunting deers doesn't make any sense to me.

Yes, you have a very interesting point to make. Dogs and other pet animals should be left free so that they could freely move here and there. I have observed here at my place that some of the pet animals like dogs do not like strangers entering their homes and they start barking and sometimes pounce on the visitor or start licking the visitors, therefore, some owners prefer to keep them under chain.

@dpk262006 That is the owners fault for not taking control and training their pets the proper way.

@dpk262006 I have always felt if people don't have time for their pets then don't have any and if you want them to be well behaved then take them to obedience classes as that will do wonders for a animal.

@Marcyaz I agree with you that it is owners fault, they must train their pets so that they are not required to chain them.

@AbbyGreenhill Why own a dog?

@infatuatedbby You would have to ask them. In the south it is very common which is why rescue dogs are shipped up north.

Some people consider dogs lawn ornaments...chain them outside, feed them very little, have no human contact.

@AbbyGreenhill Good it is about time and those doing so should be fined and spend time in jail.

@Marcyaz We now have an animal abuse registry. If you abuse an animal your name/face will be on it and everyone will know.

I can understand chaining a dog. They are destructive and tear up things. You want them to run and be free in a yard? I give you the example of the dog that dug underneath the fence to enter our yard and killed my pet turtle which was allowed to roam free in presumed safety. There is a big dog here that rams itself against the fence in vicious barking hysteria whenever someone walks by. What if that dog somehow escapes that yard? That said, the vast majority of dog owners should not be allowed to own dogs. How about tests and inspections to ensure people are fit to take care of any kind of pet.

@JohnRoberts I have never had destructive or mean dogs. If you are having problems with a neighbors dog then CALL the proper authorities. Too bad about your turtle, did you talk to the owner of this dog?

@Marcyaz The authorities in LA do not respond to low level human issues much less animal complaints. Dogs laws are not enforced in today's dog obsessed climate. I have found dog owners to be the same as excessively noisy neighbors: they either smile and do nothing or more commonly have a F You attitude.

Some dogs dig holes and make a mess out of the lawn. People who have a dog should have a fence but that doesn't always mean they can run free all day.

@celiceagle If someone has a dog that digs then of course they need to watch that dog and it should go in the house and just be let out for short periods of time.

@Marcyaz ...True. I guess what I am saying is that who knows the story of why the dog is on a chain.

A fence would be ideal and it is so easy to put one up. I dont know what is wrong with people, but I dont like to see that either Marcy. I dont blame you for wanting to take the poor things home.

@TiarasOceanView It makes me so sad when I see this and it seems to be the thing in this area. I just don't understand this type of thinking.

I know that in some countries chaining a dog is against the law, it should be in every country.

@LadyDuck I didn't know about a law in some countries that chaining a dog is against the law. I would be for that to be in every country also.

@amadeo Yeah tell me about it as I don't like this either, it's like the dog doesn't matter to them. The first thing we did before moving here was to put up a fence for my dogs.

That dog is so cute! I think chaining dogs is horrible. I don't understand how anyone can have a dog and do that. Grrrrrr

@DianneN The dog is really a cutie and to think he is chained up, just terrible. I don't know why people have a dog if they treat it like that. Grrrrrrr is right...

@Lucky15 Mine go out in the fenced in yard and run and play, they love the freedom it gives them.

Thankfully, I've never seen anyone do this to their doggy. We have a dog and it's never happened to him. I'd never tie him up like that. I'm sure we would hate it if we were chained up to a post wishing we were free to run around.

I am ok with the dog being chained up IF it is for limited time. If all you do is chain a dog up outside then you dont need a dog.

I agree, if you have a dog, you should treat it with respect, even a good run would be better than a chain.

It's up to the owner whether to put up a fence or not. If the pet owner is renting they don't have that luxury. I've had to chain many a dog because the house wasn't mine. I gave him a long enough chain so he could run and play. I was glad to have a fenced yard when I bought this house. Now some of the fence is gone, so if I do get another dog, I too will need to chain him or her. I don't have the funds to get a new fence. Pip never ran away so having the fence partially gone was no problem with her.
