Run, Hide or Fight

The company is posting workplace violence policies. Yesterday my one son had to go into work 2 hours early as the company was having a course on how to deal with workplace violence. Essentially what my son said they told the class to do was hide, run or fight back in case of a person coming in the company with a gun. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides safety guidelines for industries in health care and retailing, where patients and customers are most likely to perpetrate workplace violence. There of course is no way to predict who will become the disgruntled shooter. Does your company have any policies in place for this?

Well, I never had anything at work like this about workplace violence. It is necessary today I guess as it can happen at anytime anyplace.

@TiarasOceanView With all the workplace shootings going on I guess they want to inform their employee on what to do to protect themselves.

@Marcyaz Oh yes Marcy it is a good idea. It is very sad that it is necessary to do so.

I do not believe that companies have policies in place here. I never heard about anything like this.

@LadyDuck It would be a good idea for any company to have policies in place just in place.

@LadyDuck It definitely is a serious problem as more and more disgruntled employees are going back to the work place and shooting people.

@Marcyaz It is true that nothing ever happened here in Switzerland, I can understand that in the United States this is a serious problem.

We haven't actually gone over such things. I am rarely in the office as I am out in the field 99% of the time.

@Marcyaz I wish they would keep the doors locked. There is a keyed entry that they have when the office is closed. It should be done during the daytime too and have any visitors need to be buzzed in when they arrive.

@amnabas Yes it is good to have these procedures in place, do you have any such as this in your country?

My school system implemted polices and drill for the teachers, staff, and students. It makes sense in our crazy world.

@DianneN Great your school system has implemented policies or everyone at the school to make it a safe place to be. It only makes sense since we have all these shootings.

I am now retired b ut I last worked for the Tustin branch of the Orange C ounty Library system and as far as I knew they never had any policy about workplace violence as thefewcases of problems the manager simply called the police and itwas not the kind we experience now is petty stuff.

@Hatley They may now have updated and put new procedures in place, what do you think?

I think there is no short course like this in my country. But I think it is a good idea ti be added in the guidelines for the company.

@Shavkat You might mention this to someone in your company and perhaps they would impliment these guidelines.

Nope, not that I am aware of. I think in such situations all procedures go out the window and the fight or flight response kicks in.

@gudheart I think most people would try to hid and not even think about fighting.

I don't work in a company, but I think every company should have a course like this now a days. With what the world is coming too. We just had a work place shooting here within the month.

Sounds like that company is preparing their people for whatever may come. One never knows where the next violent attack will be, so they are doing the right thing.

No place that I worked for in the past ever had any policies on workplace violence. I don't have a conceal carry permit, though I need to get one, since I work by myself now. It's sad that our world has come to this, that we need policies to protect ourselves at our jobs. We just never know what a day holds in store for us. Have a blessed day.

@Dena91 No place that i worked at had any policies in place either but times have changed and if we don't change with the times there will be no good people left to stand up to the bad people.
