Mistake After Mistake Killed My Computer

I bought a 3TB drive in the fall to back up all my files but the process was long and tedious so I was a little slow at getting to it. I started the process but got sidetracked by other things. That was the first mistake. The other day I shut down the computer and it was installing updates. That's usually no problem but I had to go somewhere and while I didn't need it with me I didn't want it to run and sputter while I was gone (which was weird, because it doesn't matter). About 30 minutes later right before leaving I checked on it again. It still was trying to install the first update. That's just strange, so I thought it was probably frozen and turned it off. In the past that hasn't done anything wrong, so I went with it. That was the second mistake. The next day it was having issues starting up so I went into town to where my laptop was. When I came back out it was running normally and I thought it resolved itself. So I turned it off without doing anything else. Today it started again the same way, but went through the checkdisk faster. When it was up and running I decided to try system restore. That was the third mistake (not using it while it was in that mode was also a mistake). System restore failed and corrupted the Operating System. It doesn't turn on now. It did ask me to backup the files, but I didn't have enough space. I didn't think to grab the 3TB drive. That was yet again another mistake. Using a hard drive dock I attached it to my laptop but I can't seem to move any files from it. So I don't know what's happening now. My next plan is to try safe mode, and if not that, then see if it won't access that menu again to backup files. This time I will have large drive attached for the files. Hopefully one of those work. If not, I still have a few other things to try, but I think my computer is near death's door regardless (with the option of factory settings to revive it if I get the files off).

When they go bad, they go bad really quickly... Hope you get stabilized soon!

The system restore most of the time makes a mess, this also happened to my computer last year. I had a full backup and I restored from there.

Me too. I probably won't get to it right away. I didn't even think about backing up everything right away because it's done this to me multiple times in the past. I thought it would be the same song, but turns out not.

@LadyDuck Yes, the full backup is really the only way.

The system restore is a real garbage, it also destroyed my operating system last year. I had a full back up of the system and I had to restore from the backup.

@OneOfMany Even if it is necessary to reinstall the system, the important is not to lose documents and data.

I'm glad you had the back up. If I hadn't made so many mistakes this time around I would be in better shape. There's only a few archive folders from work that I need to recover, but the rest I could get back over time, if I really wanted it.

@LadyDuck Yes, I think I'll manage. Normally when confronted with a hopeless situation I panic more, but I'm rather calm this time. Fortunately I had two years worth of the archived work stored on the other drive.

Me too! I'm convinced it can get into safe mode because it gets all the way to the 'windows loading files' screen. But the trick will be to see if it actually goes there or not.

To avoid any loss of documents, I put everything on the cloud. I use six or seven clouds, each having its own purpose. This also frees up space on your hard drive.

I just don't think about the cloud.
