I suppose that was the whole purpose of this gadget. Why else would they name it so? I am happy with my desktop as I work mostly at home. Now this thing about using the laptop placing it on one's lap is reported as being harmful. Surely those who invented this would have known of the harm it does if it is placed on one's lap while working. Here is a link that talks about it. http://tinyurl.com/zdfuwna Where do you place your laptop?

When I work with my laptop I place it on the table, if I have to keep it on my lap, I use a wooden tablet to avoid overheating. The idea of @jaboUK to use a book is good too.

So it does prove to be a hazard if it is kept on a lap without taking precautions.

@allknowing One of my friend put the laptop on a pillow and the pillow caught fire from the heat, it can be very dangerous.

I do use mine on my lap but prop one end on a book so that I get some air to it. Otherwise it just overheats and turns itself off.

I always try to find a solid flat surface to lay my laptop on. It will heat quite quickly if used on your lap because there is no space below the machine to allow air to flow.

@allknowing Rubbing padding would be very inappropriate and most likely compound the situation. Many companies do market tray like tables to place on your lap for laptop use.

@Asylum In what way? Do you mean the rubber will melt?

Wish there was some rubber padding to contain the heat as many work on the laptop by keeping it on the lap

I don't have one and I had one once and I feel it would be hard to type sitting on my lap. I am a desktop person too.

When using your laptop you should use a something in between your lap and your laptop. You can use a pillow, hard cover book or they also sell something specially for that.

I use my laptop on my desk, always. That's because I can sit comfortably and avoid back pain after sitting to many hours in front of it.

The ergonomics are all wrong when you use a laptop on your lap. A poor choice of name for these devices.

You are so right. I too always wondered. Also it is so uncomfortable placing it on a lap.

@allknowing Now the German word for a mobile phone makes perfect sense - it is called "ein Handy". (@MALUSE?). Just don't try swallowing your tablet computer... :)

I don't have one but if I did it would be on a table or desk, not my lap. I love my iPad, and that is in my lap occasionally.

We have our laptop permanently on our study table. In night, we take it to our bed, and put it in our lap till we feel sleepy and put it back to table before going to sleep.

Sometimes it is on my lap. Most often it is sitting on the dining room table when I use it.

Mine is always on my lap. I have a board under it though so it gets air.
