Paying For Editing

I keep hearing the excuse from writers that they can't pay for editing. Believe me, I know it can be difficult finding an editor that will not only work with what you can afford but also take reasonable payments.
I've come across editors who want what would amount to a book advance to edit books. This doesn't even include formatting, they want extra for that.
The first editor I had worked at prices that I found reasonable and I would have stuck with her if certain things hadn't happened. I struggled through trying to find an editor for my second novel and after three attempts a friend who did editing finally came through.
Now here I am getting Grue Tales edited and I was happy to find someone who was willing to work at my price range with payments. The key is to get the word out because there are those who are willing to work with you.

For me reasonable would be around the $300 to $500 range. It is at a price I can afford and easily make payments. For some it may be more or less.

@irishidid I assume that prices would depend on a word count. Is the cost of formatting/preparing for e-book included in that?

@owlwings Some go by word count while others may have a set price or charge by the hour. There are those who do charge extra for formatting but some include it in the price.
