The Corny Thing Said About Corn

I have grown up knowing corn is a vegetable. Dynamite those brakes! Apply the emergency brakes! Stop this vegetable-mobile!
I grew up on a dairy farm and we grew a garden every summer. We grew peas, green beans, carrots, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and vegetables like that. And we grew corn which we called a vegetable.
But the corny thing is, corn is not a vegetable. A friend of mine jumped all over me when I called corn a vegetable. “Corn is not a vegetable,” he said.
“Huh?” I asked. It had always been a vegetable to me.
“After World War Two we sent corn to England to help feed the hungry,” my friend said. “They wanted to know why us stupid Americans would send them cattle feed to eat.”
That was a new one on me. Who doesn’t like corn on the cob or even corn without the cob? And, yes, I knew cows ate corn. I was raised on a dairy farm, for heaven sakes. But cows also ate oats and we didn’t go around saying oats was nothing but cattle feed.
I thought the teeter-totter in my friend’s brain must have tottered a little too far from the teeter. Then my friend explained that corn is a grain, not a vegetable.
Yes, after all these years of calling corn a vegetable, it is actually a grain. I had always thought of grain as wheat and oats which grows as a grass-like plant. Corn is nothing like that. It grows on a large stalk as high as seven feet or so. The “ears” of corn has to be broken off the stalk. Then the husk has to be removed to expose the corn–which is on a cob. I never thought corn was not a vegetable.
The corny thing said about corn is that it is a vegetable when it’s actually a grain.

I guess when you think about it corn is a grain isn´t it.
I had never thought about that either.
But to me it would only be a grain when its all though as in feeding to cattle.
Ah well, whatever it is I love corn, especially the white sweet corn Richard.

Yum-yum. I like corn on the cob. Do you like those little tiny cobs of corn in Chinese food?

@TiarasOceanView I haven't either. Every once in a while I used to go to the Safeway store and get Chinese food from the deli. But they sold that store. I understand Safeway bought Albertson's which is right across the street from the old Safeway. I haven't yet checked to see if Albertson's now has Chinese food in their deli.

I have heard that when it's not cooked, it is considered a vegetable, but when it's turned into popcorn, then it's a grain.
?????? No matter how it is categorically labeled, I enjoy corn for what it is!! I like all kinds of vegetables and grains, so it's all good.

@RichardMeister I just looked up vegetable images. It's funny how almost all of them include corn! I would think a lot of people think corn is a vegetable - is that what we're taught?

@much2say Yes, I believe we are taught that corn is a vegetable. I was brought up being told that and no one ever corrected me until my friend did. And I was in my 50s by that time.

Yes, I like corn, too. I can thank Dr. Oz for giving me the idea to write this discussion. He called corn a vegetable on his show and the first thing I thought about was my friend telling me that corn was not a vegetable. And even though my friend is knowledgeable about food I looked it up to make sure it was correct.

True, but they also make potato chips out of potatoes which is a vegetable.

@RichardMeister I was thinking of the multi-grain snack and corn is included.

@cherriefic Oh, ok. But even then it would not have crossed my mind that corn was a grain and not a vegetable.

To me, too. That's probably why it's mistaken for a vegetable.

Probably for the same reason I did not know it. Everyone, from the time I was a kid, called corn a vegetable.
