Springtime is Nesting time for this Jaybird

Yesterday I noticed this female California Scrub Jay making repeated visits to a planter basket in the back yard. The basket is lined with coconut husks and will be hanging filled with Nasturtiums unless the bird takes the husks all away for her nest.
Anne set the camera up on the tripod in the kitchen window, and when I was in the kitchen at the right time I took a series of photos.
It was really quite funny to see her stuff her beak so full, then fly away to build her nest. She (or another bird) was back this morning as well.

Anne left a little and some batting for the jay and moved the basket today.

Excellent candid shot and I'm impressed you knew the name of this one. I'm a part time birder and love to see new birds. Are they always up from California----as you live in Oregon?

They are called that name, but are quite common in western Oregon as well as Calif. We also have Stellar Jays around in large numbers in just slightly higher elevations.

@JamesHxstatic WE have the gorgeous but noisy blue jay here and it has become the name of Ontario's Baseball team but we don't get the Scrub or the Stellar Jay here.

I'm not a huge fan of Jays. I remember once at my old home an unexpected visit of the critters (not often found there) led to attack by a swift-flying hawk. Jay for dinner!

Cute picture. One needs to keep a vigil to be able to capture such moments. I have birds perpetually running in and out picking up stuff to build their nests. I must try and see where they have made their home.

The husks in her beak, and I really had to look as I didn't realize that's what it was, makes it look like she has a mustache. I thought, wow, I'd never seen a bird with whiskers before. And, I guess I never will again, for they aren't whiskers afterall.
I don't have bird feeders yet, as I'm not here enough to watch birds, but I do enjoy them when they visit. I saw a couple of pigeons, we think they were that almost looked pregnant as they sat on our railing. A customer today, told me how birds will fluff up their feathers to stay warmer. They looked normal from the side of the house.
Btw, found this post on the side suggestions.

I love Scrub Jays. When I lived in Ventura, a nesting couple adopted me as part of their family. It was wonderful I sure miss them.
