Do Not Remove!

How many of us read all the instructions when receiving a new item. Believe it or not, I try to. Many years ago a girlfriend bought me an electric razor for a birthday present. As soon as I opened it she said, “Come on, try it out.” I pulled the directions out and started reading them. “You’re the only person I know that reads the instructions before using something,” she said. “It’s better to know the proper way of using something before you use it.” “Well, whatever.” It was a good thing I read the instructions. They said the razor would not work until it was fully charged and it came discharged. If I would have jump right in and tried to use it I would have told my girlfriend it didn’t work and to take it back. After it was charged it worked great. I used it for about twenty years. (It lasted longer than the girlfriend.) Several years ago I bought a memory foam mattress. It came with a cover that had a zipper on it. I read the instructions but didn’t find anything about the mattress cover. After about a year I decided I needed to wash the cover. I unzipped it and threw it into the washing machine. It came out looking great. I did the same thing about three times. On the last time I noticed on the bottom part of the cover, which goes under the mattress and I saw no need to wash, there was a tag with information on how to clean the cover. The first thing on the tag was, “Do not remove the cover. To clean, dampen a cloth and sponge the area to be cleaned.” What? They put a zipper on the cover–why didn’t that make it removable? I mean, if it was non-removable why wasn’t the thing sewed up so it could not be removed? Or the zipper pull cut off so it could not be unzipped? Whose crazy idea was it to put a zipper on something that was not supposed to be removed? Anyway, it didn’t seem to hurt the cover to wash it so I continued to do so. Was it a trick so when the cover became smelly people would think it was time to buy a new mattress? I don’t know but my bed always smells cleaner after the cover has been washed. Have you ever run into a similar situation?

@RichardMeister Nope, I dont believe in spot cleaning..I mean especially something you sleep on...has to be washed makes sense to me.

@TiarasOceanView I agree. When I read that on the tag I thought it was a bit nutty.

I read most of the directions that come with new products. Just this evening, I opened a new heater for my living room. I followed instructions to assemble the legs and thought I understood how to run it, but I really needed instructions for that, too. I really don't mind taking the time to read them. As for your mattress cover, I guess I would have thought the same as you. Makes no sense not to take it off and wash it.

The mattress came with very little instructions. The only thing I can remember it saying was I might want to air it out before using it if the smell bothered me. I guess it was figured people would read the tag. I think the tag got slipped underneath the mattress because I had never noticed it the first couple of times I washed the covering.

@RichardMeister I wish my mattress had come with a cover, but I got mine before they started putting the zippered covers on them. Now I do my best to air it out, sprinkle baking soda and then vacuum it off again so at least it smells fresh. So far, so good! :)

I always read the instructions - in fact, if it's on paper, I will keep them in a bin with other instructions - just in case. But I would have done the same as you regarding that cover! I will say I've gotten a bunch of clothes from the thrift shop that says Dry Clean Only - but I've washed them all gently and they've been fine!

Hi, Richard! I normally read the instructions whenever I buy something new. There's something about reading labels of a new product that excites me. I go over it again and again before actually using the item. But there are some products that I am already familiar with so I do away with reading the instructions.

I can't say I get "excited" from reading instructions. I just know it may save you a lot of headaches.

@RichardMeister You are very right. I really should start reading the instruction first. Especially with things like that...
