“You will have 4, Ma’am”

There was good news when I went to the hospital last Saturday to have my blood extracted for PTPA after all. The bad news was, I was not able to withdraw money so my son lent me a thousand pesos, which I paid this morning when I was able to withdraw from my account.
The PTPA result needed an hour to get, so I and my son went out to have our snacks in Chow King. On our way out, I met our clinical coordinator, Ma’am LC carrying her daughter. I asked her why, and she said her kid had fever and difficulty urinating, so her pediatrician requested a complete blood count and urinalysis.
Ms. LC asked how was I and I said I am fine and well and better. I reiterated again my request to be given work load for next school year, first semester, even for 2 days only. She said with a smile, “You will still have 4, Ma’am” which means I will still have 4 duty days a week. I do not know though, what year levels will I handle.
Well and good, it will be my 12th year as a part-time clinical preceptor, and I hope my students will not give me head ache, and heart ache as well.
Isn’t it nice to be given work load despite my absence on the last day of our duty?
How about you, my friends? Have you been given the same privilege despite your absence from work?

I'm glad to hear you are getting healthy. I hope 4 days won't be to much for you.

Thank you. If in case I cannot cope up with the tasks in the ward, I can just tell our clinical coordinator to give me 2 days duty only. I can work 4 days provided I will not be on 3-11PM shift or 11PM-7AM shift.

@ridingbet Those shifts are brutal. I used to be a baker and worked in the middle of the night. Wore me out.

@fishtiger58 that is why I always prefer morning shifts rather than late and night shifts. It drains my energy

humbly speaking my friend. I always have the highest or second to the highest, and most satisfactory evaluation among all CI's and the comments of the students are also good, with nary a bit of disgust or ire from them.

@salonga thanks, my dear, but I think we will be employed for two more years then there will be a lull for 2 more years, then back again. This is due to that K to 12 thingy.

that is great. Your boss believes in you. Punctuality and always being present are good traits of a model employee.
That is why i did not apply too, for the N2 position in the hospital because once I finish my 8 hours of handling my students, I can sit back, relax, put my tired feet up, and watch TV at home.

@MGjhaud the responsibilities of being an N2 is quite difficult, hija. I cannot climb up the third floor to attend seminars then go down the ward to be with the staff nurses. It is better that I stay a part-time CI.

thanks. I am a good-old, seasoned clinical instructor catering to the needs of these students who should be hungry for nursing knowledge and skills. hehehe!

@ridingbet And don't forget strict , because a strict professor really would like her student to learn well.

@SIMPLYD indeed. That is what my level 4 students tell the level 2 and 3; "Ma'am Ingrid is so strict in the area but you will learn much from her".

they should be prepared to lighten your duties or give you more leave if you need more time to fully recover - good luck

I am the oldest among all part-time CI's now, my friend. There was one but she resigned and retired already because she turned 60 years old. Part-time, because there are older full-time CI's.

thank you. I see many of my former students, now my colleagues, showing me their appreciation by telling my students that I am strict but they will learn much from me. well, I am a seasoned instructor so I treat them as my kids, and yes, they trust me (students and the administrators of the college of nursing).

I hope though that I will be properly compensated because I am a faithful and committed part-time employee of the institution. Anyhow, even if I don't have the financial privilege, it is still my joy to be a teacher to these students, honestly.

I hope I will also live up to their expectations, my friend. I share my knowledge to them so they should be receptive as well.

they should be, my dear. The senior students I handled will always share their experiences to the junior learners and they know I hate tardiness, and not being ready for duty, and also incomplete uniform and no knowledge of their cases.
