Mountain Music

We have a very large county library that sponsors musical groups all summer. There is no charge, but the groups usually have CDs they offer for sale. I don’t usually buy, but I did purchase a CD of some Peruvian flute players one time. Their music is so beautiful. Have you ever heard it? Last night for one hour they had the Campbell Family Band, from Waynesboro, Virginia. The Mother, played the Cello, and the Father who mostly played the fiddle, but also played the banjo. Two daughters, one who played the guitar and sang and the other played the mandolin and banjo on various songs. They also demonstrated the “clog” dancing. It was very enjoyable. In between songs they gave the history of some of the songs, which were “mountain” songs from the hills of Virginia, West Virginia and other states. I grew up with “mountain music,” having been born and raised in West Virginia. My family would get together quite often and play all the instruments mentioned above. I learned to play the guitar, but haven’t played for a long time. I was usually the singer in the group. I still love to sing. The library was also having a Book Sale following the concert and I HAD to go look. The hard cover books were only $1 and the paperbacks were fifty cents. I only purchased 5 books and two were for my brother. He likes Louis L’Amour novels, so I always look for them at Thrift Stores, Goodwill, and Book Sales. I used to think that Louis L’Amour novels were racy and I wouldn’t read them, but one day, I decided to read one and see what they were like. I found that they were NOT racy and were in fact, far from that. Louis L’Amour was a good writer. What I noticed most, was how he could describe a scene so well, that you could picture it and feel the tension that was involved in what was happening. Have you ever read a Louis L’Amour novel? My husband was a huge fan of Louis L'Amour. His novels were the only books he would read. My daughter is now collecting his books. Every time we are in the Goodwill she looks for any that may be there and grabs all that she doesn't have to add to her collection.

It's a good place to look for the books. I have found about 30 so far that I have sent to my brother and have 7 right now to send him. We are going to do a Goodwill day this month, so I'm waiting to do that. My daughter and I go to 5 or 6 Goodwill stores around Richmond on one day and have lunch somewhere. It's a FUN day. We try to do it once a month at least.

He was a good writer, very descriptive in writing the scenes and the feelings of his characters. I just had my first novel published.
