Queensryche is a Seattle-based metal band, producing, over the years, "smart" metal, or as SPIN magazine once called them, "thinking man's metal."
In 1988, the classic Queensryche lineup (vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarist's Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton, bassist Eddie Jackson, and drummer Scott Rockenfield) released one of rock music's great concept albums in Operation: Mindcrime.
Operation: Mindcrime is the story of a disillusioned junkie that becomes an assassin for an underground revolution.
"Anarchy - X/Revolution Calling" opens the album in such a manner that, without them, the band might as well not have bothered making the rest of the record.
Don't like metal? I can see that. I'll also say that this album might be an exception to your rule.
And it all begins right here.

When I was in basic, I hung out with a guy who put an Anarchy symbol on all his outgoing mail, just to see if they would censor his mail.

I like metal, but I've only got three metal albums on there. Mostly 80's Alternative and acid jazz.

@Ronrybs I've got a greatest hits from Whitesnake, which is pretty mainstream, and a best of Rainbow, which were metal when Dio was with them.

You're right on just about every point. I'm not a metal fan. This, however, isn't prototypical (or "commercial") "heavy metal." The music, to me, is more "melodic." The lyrics are definitely meaningful!

@teamfreak16 -- I don't know where you'd put them, but the only thing "loud" (metal or metal-like, I guess you might say) is Bon Scott-era AC/DC. Brian Johnson sounds like every other hard rock/metal singer to me, but Bon's voice was unique.

@FourWalls - Brian Johnson is good at what he does, but I miss Bon Scott. The band was better back then.

It's a bit different than bad hair metal and stuff.
