The First Present I Ever Bought My Mother

How long ago was that, and what year was it? It was a good many years, you can be sure.
I had never bought anybody anything by way of a present. But I had just a little money and I wanted to buy my mother something. It had to be pretty. It had to be cheap.
I went to Woolworth's. I spotted a really cheap tea cup with saucer, made in Japan. It was pretty, if in a kind of chintzy way. But it had caught my eye and it fell within the capability of my pocketbook.
What was the first gift YOU ever purchased?

I don't remember buying gifts until I was about eleven. That year I bought each member of my family a Christmas gift. I look back on it now and think, my heart was in the right place but my parents were sure hard to buy for.

@KuznVinny I think that year I bought 9 gifts and spent about $10. I realize that was many years ago, but it was about 8 hours of babysitting money.

After writing the above "article" I read elsewhere that a woman bought her mother a crystal bowl at a fancy shop. That kid had entirely too much money.

such a shame if they were thrown away, l hope someone from the family took it and if not, i hope it went to a second hand shop and found a good new home.

One cup was all a kid from that era could afford. Unless he had Rockefeller for a father.
