Trying to earn a living.

Greece
April 6, 2016 2:58pm CST
This morning we broke from a busy routine to have coffee by the sea. We were alone in the outdoor cafeteria except for one man who approached us carrying a small case. He opened it and asked us if we would like to buy some earrings. They were quite nice but as make my own I had no need for any more. However my husband insisted that I chose a pair. He had been speaking to the man in Greek and after he left he told me that the man had been in computer graphics until the austerity measures meant he lost his job three years ago. Now he makes earrings. I admired the man for trying something so different in order to bring in some money. He was obviously well educated and must have made a decent living before. Times are hard here and getting harder, people no longer feel secure, jobs are continually under threat and those with jobs find their wages being decimated month by month.

@41combedaleroad I run a job club for people who want to get back into work. Its terrible how so many are so apathetic compared to the man you mention. Too many bottoms being sat on here.

My son in law just lost his job and don't know how long it will be before he will find a new one. Times are getting harder & harder for sure and no one can be comfortable being employed anymore. Never know when they might downsize or lay people off. It was nice that your husband & you bought some earrings from the gentleman selling them and I give him credit for trying to find a way to earn a living.

Sometimes, you just have to try something, in order to try and earn a little money. This is a good way of doing it. It's something worth trying, and I hope that he's able to earn enough to help.

That's really a good way to fight unemployment.

I like the man`s determination, instead of sitting down, giving up and feeling cheated,he went out and tried something different. Im sure in time things will be better in Greece again

Isn't it a shame a man so educated can't made a decent living any more. I know a man who was out of work for three years and had to move from his state and sell his home for a decent job, that is so sad as it is happening in a lot of countries. Everything has become so expensive people are having a hard time just living on what they make.

I could just imagine the amount of pride that the man had to swallow to be doing that. He must have been used to a different (better) working environment being in computer graphics as compared to approaching people in cafeterias and selling earings. So do you end up buying a pair?

It's really sad that so many people find themselves in that situation. Unfortunately as the use of technology increases, things only seem to get worse.

I know that Greece is having a hard time, even without all the refugees landing on your shores and I hope the EU countries try to help more.

This is very sad. People would feel so insecure never knowing from one day to the next what is going to happen.

There are a lot of people in his situation. That is good that he is doing something to try to earn some money.
