Boycotting Celebrities Based on Their Beliefs

There was an article posted on a friend's Facebook wall yesterday. It had a headline (worse than the "Holy Crap, Here's a .GIF Loop of Oprah Crying!" thing) about "Loretta Lynn Supports Donald Trump!!!!"
Yeah? And?????
This isn't anything all that new. In the mid-70s there was a boycott against Anita Bryant, who was a spokesperson for Florida orange juice and became a vocal opponent of gay rights. Bryant, much later in life, admitted (a) she didn't know what she was talking about and (b) she was sorry.
But the thing that bothered me about the headline is that it seems to be skewered toward conservatives. I remember the Behind the Music on Ted Nugent, where VH-1 ran a disclaimer in big bold letters about Nugent's opinions not reflecting anyone at VH-1, Viacom, or in the United States.
Y'know, I'd like to think that people would hate Ted Nugent for his crappy music, not for his political beliefs.
But is this where we are now, in the Divided States of America? People writing articles that imply, "don't listen to this person, they're a Christian" or "they're Republican"? Do you think anyone really hears a song they like on the radio and says, "Oh, that's terrific, but I'd better check who they're voting for in the next election before I go to iTunes and buy it?"
I think Loretta Lynn's new album, Full Circle, is fabulous.. Listening to it, you'd never dream that's an 84-year-old woman singing. I'm going to see her in September.
And I don't care who she does or doesn't support. That's not why I listen to her.
Here's my favorite song off Loretta's new album, featuring Elvis Costello on backing vocals!

That was great. I saw Elvis Costello in Belgium. Just him, his acoustic guitar, and a lot of sequencing. He was still awesome, even without a band.

Loretta with Elvis C. That's a unique combo. If we boycotted every actor, singer etc because we don't like their politics or how they live their personal lives or this or that, there would be no one to listen to or watch.

If you remember Elvis' "country" album Almost Blue he covered Loretta's first hit, "Success," on it.

That thing of Oprah crying is probably fake. I did thing Loretta was too clever to be in Trump's corner though. I tend to be politically selective about many things though if I know enough about the person or business.

I remember the Anita Bryant thing!
I don't much care for a person's politics when it comes to just listening to their music (and I'm with you on Ted Nugent, BTW.) But if I'm going to put money into someone's pocket, I might think twice if they were very vocal about an issue that was dear to my heart. They're welcome to belong to a different political camp. But I do draw the line if they're actively racist, homophobic, etc. and trying to convert the rest of us too.

lots of celebrities have questionable beliefs - Tom Cruise and John Travolta are scientologists, Eric Clapton supported Enoch Powell's racist speeches, Jane Fonda opposed the Vietnam War, so I agree with her
