I haven't been told off yet

I am sitting here just about to head out the door. It's only 9:30 but I don't have to be there until 11. I like to come in at 10 instead though, and have not yet been told off about it. I suppose as long as the department hours aren't going over, then it's fine. I've done this for several years now as I prefer ten to eleven. Off I go! I shall see you all later. Have you ever had a job where you could go in earlier than your shift and not be told off about it? Most of the time I am able to get out early so it all ends up being even in the end.

At my last job I worked 8:30a to 4p. I would try to get there a little early and get something to eat and drink, prepare for the day. No one cared if I was early. Better early than late. But, no I had to be on the phones until the end of my day or it screws up their figures.

yikes I don't think I could be talkative at 8:30 in the morning! Were you allowed food or beverage where you sat? I can imagine talking would dry your throat out considerably.

That is great that your hours can be flexible a little! I never had a circumstance to adjust my schedule so I never had. Have a nice evening!

I prefer the night and am so glad I have the shift I do. Even if I do get aggravated at the politics of the company anjd our overhead maanger. I am glad though that we have a bit of flexibility. I hope understand this through my typos. Lol the computer is acting up again and I am just too sorry to fix my typos right now.

Overtime is frowned upon at our company. In fact, we don't get paid any extra if we work overtime. It can be annoying, as more often than not we have to work more hours than we are allotted for the week.

@MGjhaud I have been with the company since 2011. I moved departments in 2013/14ish. Our direct manager will thank us and two of the co managers but the overhead manager doesn't seem to like that word, so when / if we have to work a little extra it's just expected.

My hours are pretty much flexible. As long as the client agrees to being seen at an earlier time I can go in earlier. Somedays I can adjust my schedule and bump clients up so I can get out earlier in the day. Sometimes not.

I think the only job that I could be truly flexible with was my gig as an in home aide. Since it was my ex husband's great grandmother, I could go in later if I so wished. I n fact, she never woke up until around 10 or 11m though my shift started at 8.

@ScribbledAdNauseum that is what I do for work. Some of my clients will nap while I am there. Others follow me around and point out every little dust ball I leave behind.

I have never had a job like that. I can go in an hour earlier than normal, or two if they need me to break down the truck, but otherwise I have to stay within the allotted hours per shift. Like last night, I went in early but only to get a head start and be able to leave early as well.

I can go in early if I want and it is nice to get there early and review the teacher's plans. But I can't leave early. I have to stay until the last child is picked up! or leaves to walk home.

You don't stay for after school activities or tutoring? Just the school day itself? Provided all kids are picked up?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am a substitute teacher. I go home when the school day is done. Elementary schools in this area have only a few after school activities anyway though.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I worked in a library years ago and worked 30 minutes over my schedule because someone made a big mess with sneaked in food. I got reamed for that.

Not all of them. My bosses don't mind so much as long as I am not going over on my hours. If I come in early and leave 7 - 8 hours later, they are fine. It's when it gets over that they start to get aggravated with us. W e have to remind them that "hey it's a busier time of year." or "We can't help it, we were a man short tonight." We are only human after all.

I figure better you be early than latr! I am always towork about 45 minutes early but I cannot clock in until 7 minutes before my shift starts. Cool that you have a job that is so flexible. Do you overnights then? And do you like that?

Yes it's over night hours, and I like the shift but not necessarily the politics. They dont' want us to clock in until 5 minutes before the shift starts but we always seem to clock in 20 minutes early (at the very least) and our only concession is we've got to be out of there early, or take a bit of a longer lunch because of it. I like to get there as early as possible so I can leave as early as possible, I don't particularly like the morning crew.

That's good since your time is flexible. Mine is fixed. I had to start on time so the succeding sessions will not be affected.

We are the last in and the first out for the day. We don't really have problems with stepping on the toes of other shifts, so to speak, but we do share some equipment that can put everyone on a delay.

@carebear29 I have always arrived a few minutes early. I think the only job I did not do that with was as a banquet server because it did no good to be early then. I go in now, pick out a lunch and purchase it. It gives me an idea of what to expect that night work wise. I prefer to be able to do that.

THey do care when we are over on our hours. If we go in early to leave early, and still have the same amount of hours or less, they dont' care.

Nope, I can't say I have. I worked hospital shifts in my first job, and then retail. My freelance work is the only job that allows me to work on my own time.

What were the hospital shifts like? 10-12 hours or something to that effect? It's been forever since I was admitted into a hospital, but visiting friends and family, it seems there are only like two nurses per day working.

@Ruby3881 Yes definitely, sleep is really important. I've done 8-12 hour shifts but never in the health profession. I was an in home aide but only ever worked 8 hours for them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We did 8 hour shifts where I worked. I did mostly evenings (3:30 - 11:30 pm) and nights (11:30 pm to 7:30 am.) I did sometimes opt to do overtime for 4-8 hours after a regular shift, so I've worked up to 16 hours straight. But I always did it only when I had the next day off, so I could sleep.
