When computers don't cooperate....

Have you ever had problems with a browser plugin like Adobe Flash or Shockwave? I'm having issues today, and although my computers and I normally get along just fine, this is one of those moments when the software update is just getting my goat! I've downloaded, installed, and run the troubleshooting. And half of the advice for troubleshooting, I couldn't even use because the files I was looking for didn't even exist! I'm at my limit now. I'm not going to attempt any more of this today. If hubby can't figure it out, I'll ask him to consult his computer wizard friend.... [Image: ClkerFreeVectorImagesPixabayCC0]

sometimes I have daily problems with those programs and other times it leaves me alone for awhile. Yesterday, it kept shutting down and I had to reload it, but today I've not had any problems with it. The odd thing is it does it whether I have one tab opened up or many. Today, I have more tabs opened than I had yesterday, yet it's less problematic. Mine are up to date, so I don't know why it keeps acting up. I especially hate it when in the middle of a comment and it needs to be 'killed'. Sometimes I'll print the screen so I can start again with what I had. If you find out why it needs to be reloaded all the time, I'd like to know.

@Ruby3881 No clue here either. Not once today did mine shut down or quit working, but yesterday it happened several times over and over again and on more than one site.

I noticed that mine isn't as bad today either. I have to think there's a reason for that, but darned if I know what it is....

When this happens, I close the browser and start with a new page, it usually solves the problem.

@Ruby3881 This is the problem with many plugins. I still use an old Windows 7 and I have no problems, my husband has installed a Windows 8.1 and Shockwave crashes. It is true that I use Chrome as a browser and he uses Firefox because he hates Chrome.

Unfortunately, this is a problem of a plugin that is malfunctioning. A fresh browser window doesn't fix whatever programming bug is behind this. It's probably an incompatibility somewhere, and my experience tells me there will be another update in the near future which will (probably) fix the issue, but it may take longer than that. I've had chronic problems with both Flash and Shockwave over the past decade or so. I suspect the problem is that they program for the most common configurations only, and don't care a fig for interoperability or backwards compatibility until a whole bunch o people complain about something that isn't working.

@LadyDuck I'm still on a windows 7 computer, Anna, and I also use chrome, yet mine keeps crashing too. Some days are better or worse than others.

May I ask you some questions, Kyla? What is your O/S? Which browser are you using? Which programs have you noticed having problems? I recently started having issues with my Shockwave plugin. I couldn't update it, nor would it allow me to use it. Many of the videos that I watched using Shockwave simply manifest as a blank box. Yes, I figured out the problem, but if your problem is similar to mine, you won't want to know about it!

@Ruby3881 I bet it is still the programs fighting with Win10! I really don't understand why Microsoft made a Windows program that fights with everything we've always used, but they did and I bet one of the updates you've allowed to install is an update for Win10, whether you know it or not. You will need to find it and delete it before you can get Win7 to work right.

I'm using Chrome on a fresh install of Win 7. The main issue seems to be the plugin crashing repeatedly, and generally slowing the browser down. I'm not having any issues with videos or anything like that (which I would have expected with Shockwave.) But on sites like Facebook, MyLot, BlogJob, etc., the plugin crashes repeatedly while I'm interacting with content on the page - sometimes just because I've loaded the page. I downloaded and installed the latest update, but Shockwave's own test page can't even detect it. I've had this problem before, most often when I was using Firefox on Win XP, and the whole world was still using Internet Explorer. Sites would claim the plugin couldn't be located, even though it was installed in the default location. And Adobe offered no helpful advice at all....

@DaddyEvil Considering I had this same problem, back when I was using Win XP and there was no Win 10 to even talk about, my bet is it's just Adobe. I've had chronic problems with their plugins. They never play nice....

When that sort of thing happens I uninstall the software with revo uninstaller using the big uninstall so it removes all the registry leftovers. Then I install it from scratch. That's always worked for me

I haven't used that app, but I like that it cleans up the registry for you. I'll have to look into it. Thanks, Mike!

Usually I grit my teeth, follow the prescribed procedure, and the problem gets fixed. But as I said in some of the other comments, Shockwave and Flash have a history of being stubborn

I usually find I can cope with most of the software issues, Marie. But sometimes it seems the software was engineered to be difficult! I've long felt that way about Flash & Shockwave, as neither has a history of playing nice. It seems no matter what OS or browser I'm using, there's always some issue with Adobe finding itself once installed...

I'm not even that technologically savvy. If I have a problem that I can't sort out, I call my daughter and let her figure it out for me.

My backup is hubby's tech people. Hubby is the hardware guy, and he knows stuff about the big things like the BIOS, reformatting hard drives, partitioning the hard drive, etc. I usually deal with everyday stuff like installing Windows updates, virus protection, adding software we need, etc. But when I get stuck I turn it over to him.

Let's hope the current situation is temporary! It's a fresh install of the OS, on a brand new solid state hard drive, so I'm surprised I'm having issues so soon
