A empty nest is not a good thing

Last week I told you about the Killdeer bird who made a nest in our front yard. She originally had 4 eggs and a day later a 5th appeared. A few days after that my husband went out there to see how things were and he came back in the house to report 3 babies had hatched and were running around.
I got sick, we had a lot of rain and a few nights of freezing temps. While I was inside safe and warm, Mom, Dad and the 3 little ones disappeared completely. My husband went to check the nest yesterday and there were two unhatched eggs and no sign of any of the birds.
I can only hope the little family found a safe and warm place to stay and will soon come back here, their home.
But, on the bright side, Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird have made a beautiful nest on our front porch. They worked so hard on it, they have been quite busy the last few days, and I have a perfect view of the action. So hopefully I'll get to see baby bluebirds in the near future.

We don't have bluebirds here but I sure wish we did. They are so pretty. Can't wait to see your pics of them.

It is amazing how many different shades of blue there are - we have one around here who is such a bright blue you need sunglasses to look at it.

@AbbyGreenhill We see an occasional bluejay but that's it where blue is concerned. I would love to see the variety of blue colored birds you have.

@fishtiger58 My husband isn't a fan of Blue Jays, they are fighters. We only have one or two around here...but loads of Bluebirds.

Plus the babies can't fly - they can run like the wind...I hope nothing got them.

The bluebird nest blew out of it's hiding place and is now on the ground - they will have to start over again...I hope they make one that's a little heavier.

@AbbyGreenhill Poor bluebirds, a lot of work for nothing. Two years ago I was able to recover a nest from the ground and I fixed it in the middle of the hedge. The little bird used it.

@LadyDuck This one looks like it couldn't be 'fixed'...

They usually will nest in a special bluebird house, but we don't have one so our front porch is probably safer for them anyway - although we will have to deal with lots of poop on the porch!

The nest blew down - it's very light and airy and we had a lot of wind...so now they will have to start all over again.

They nest on the ground, in the dirt - and so far she has never used the same spot more than once.

I hope the Killdeer come back for the rest of their family and didn't abandon those poor unhatched eggs. Lucky you having literally a birds eye view of the bluebirds making their nest

The bluebirds have been very busy - they did look a little startled when they arrived at the nest and it was no longer there.

We used to have killdeer build nests in the garden. They would throw a fit whenever we got near. We have some new tenants in the bluebird box we put up last month. I can't wait to see the little ones learning how to fly.
