When I was in grade school I had to walk to school through all kinds of weather as the school I went to had no school buses.
My mom or dad always made sure I had a brown paper bag to take my lunch in and would give me 10 cents to buy my favorite desert which was a Hostess Cupcake.
There was a small corner store on the way to school that I always stopped at for my Cupcakes.
Wow that was a long time ago and the Hostess Cupcakes are still around.
I haven't had one in a long time but back in grade school I had a Cupcake five days a week.
Unfortunately the grade school I went to has closed down.
What do you recall about grade school that was memoriable to you?

I remember walking to and from school every school day a good mile at least.
That is the main thing I recall Marcy.

You don't even remember a favorite teacher or something else, just walking to school.

We had Notre Dame nuns and it was two young nuns I remember who were mean and the older nuns were very nice.

I walked to school and only rode the bus when there were field trips. The first school I went to had no cafeteria so we ate our sack lunch in the classroom with our milk served in small glass bottles.

We never had field trips as such but the girls had a basketball team, when we went to other schools we had to figrre out are own rides. We just had a small room as a cafeteria.

Funny my first few years were just like yours. The school was at the end of the street and a corner store was across the street. I think I went home for lunch. I don't remember - funny, I remember the rest...Then we moved to the country and I rode the school bus and took lunch to school.

I never went home for lunch but occasionally a friend would ask me if I wanted to go with her to her grandmother's house for lunch which I did and it was fun.

I can write a book on my school memories. Here is a poem I wrote about school days:
SCHOOL TIMES
Destiny takes us we know not where
But we carry our memories there
School times, classmates loads of fun
Exams done accolades won.
Driving teachers round the bend
Teasing, jeering it had no end
“Stand on the bench” they’d scream away
But from them we would run away
Lunch time spent in running around
In the baking sun till the ball was found
The recess over, back to the class
Striving for those marks to pass
Some were always upto pranks
Competing for those tempting ranks
Pushing prodding to come out first
If one failed the tears would burst
Classmates are a wonderful gift
Try your best stop the drift
Teachers, masters ever so kind
Tough it was to leave them behind
So many years of endless joy
Fun and frolic boy oh boy!
Dramas, rehearsals, singing galore
I wish those years were here once more

We moved when I was in third grade. I had a slight 'Baltimore' accent and the kids in the new school in New Jersey laughed at me - that's why I picked up the Jersey Twang fast after that.

Kids can be cruel without even knowing they are being so. No wonder you picked up the Jersey Twang fast.

We wore slacks under our skirts and dresses but put them in our locker when we got to school, because girls weren't allowed to wear them in school.

I remember hot dog day, one day a week, they sold hot dogs for 25 cents, and corn nuts, chips, popsicles, I enjoyed hot dog day. This was a big treat, I also remember being bullied, back then we never used the word bully , you didn't hear about it. I had long, long hair, the 8th graders would call me long hair monkey, slightly over weight, you got called names. All this happened during recess, but others were picked on also, I dreaded recess, so I would choose to hide in the bathroom. not always fond memories of grade school for me.

We had to walk 1/4 of a mile just to get to the bus stop and in Iowa winters, sometimes the bus would be late and by the time it got there, you couldn't feel your feet or hands anymore. We always had sack lunches too @Marcyaz .

Because of a move when I was nearly nine I went to two different elementaries. I did get on a bus for the first one. We never had extra money for treats but the first grade school I went to had a snack cart if I had had a nickel. To get to shop there you had to earn a clean plate button by eating everything on your plate. There were also contests to see which classroom earned the most clean plate buttons each month. The buttons were color coded on back so you could not 'borrow" one from another class. I am not sure what we won, it has been a long time. The clean plate buttons by themselves were enough to motivate me to try new foods I did not like.

That sounds like an interesting concept colored buttons for a clean plate.
