Battling through injury last night

My softball team had it's first game of the season last night. I spent the late afternoon playing hoops with my 10-year-old kid client and his older brother, as I've done many times before. Too much sun and not enough Gatorade--I pulled a muscle in my calf. I iced my calf for an hour and went to the softball game hoping to root my team on, but they had only nine players, plus me. I usually play shortstop (an important position that requires mobility), but I played catcher last night. I was quite a sight, hobbling around behind the plate. The umpire was nice, so he and I joked around through the whole game. I had them bat me next to last, and had no idea what would happen if I had to run. I actually went three for three, with three singles, and felt my calf loosening up as the game went on. We tied a good team 8-8. Today, I can see a bruise there, where the partially torn muscles released blood. I may call the advice nurse this morning, but she's probably going to say "RICE" (rest, ice, compression, elevation). I called my 93-year-old Auntie this morning and told her about playing through the injury. "I'm a tough old bird, like you," I said. She laughed. Have you ever had to battle through an injury when you thought you'd be able to rest? It turned out to be a satisfying evening, though my calf hurts a bit this morning.

You are tough. I wouldn't mind if you put some of that toughness to good use on our so called garden patch.

@TheHorse Just for you. There used to be a butt head rock in this hole. Hubby had quite a time working the mutt loose.

Aw! I hope your calf gets better! I almost rolled my ankle last night. We need to be more careful I just learned what RICE means in break down! Have a great weekend!

Sorry to hear this, but a sports injury sounds much better than being a klutz! Heal up fast.

I don't believe in battling through an injury. I think that results in permanent damage. Not a good idea! The advice nurse would smack you for doing so.

@hereandthere My back, neck, shoulders and arms are mostly recovered. If I skip my stretches or exercises, then the pain returns. My knee still hurts more than it did before the accident, but may eventually return to pre-injury levels. Who knows? Thanks for asking. Oh, my other injuries seem to have healed.

Pony ...you can't be too old! May be near about 45 or so? May be 50 max. As to calf...well, it will hurt only for a day...hang in..if things don't improve, amputation is always an option. Kidding...take rest.

I'm going with rest rather than amputation. But I did take an (easy) hike with a kid client yesterday afternoon. Alas, I'm over 50. At least I think so. I stopped counting.

I tend to battle through illnesses. It's probably why it takes me eight weeks to get over bronchitis: I just can't stay in bed for three days and "get well," so I stay sick. And I know it's going to happen when I don't allow myself the opportunity to rest and recover...and yet I still do it.

I'm pretty much the same way. But I'll try to be good to my leg these next few days.

You surely know that you did the wrong thing playing instead than resting your injured calf. Now you should apply a compression with an elastic bandage, to provide support and decrease swelling, also elevate the injured area and rest. Good luck.

@TheHorse It is recommended for pulled muscle in a calf.

Yep. I was good yesterday. Played music and did nothing physical. I'll keep doing rest and ice, but I haven't done compression and elevation.

I know what you mean @TheHorse . I get charlie horses in my calves all the time and they are no fun either. Depending on how bad they are and how long they last, it can be a couple of days for the legs to feel better. It's amazing how those muscles can twist or pull.

Yes, they're a bother. I really think I need to hydrate more, though I drink a lot of Gatorade as it is.

@TheHorse I know when summer-time hits and I'm outside pulling weeds in the pasture and other activities (especially when it's over 100 degrees), I'm sucking down water as fast as I can get it.

It certainly helped my "psyche." I've iced it a couple of times today. I'm still limping about, but it doesn't hurt that bad.

Back when I was a cross country geek in high school, once in awhile I'd get shin splints and have to run with them. That is the worst.

@TheHorse Very painful. To me, it always felt like my shins were going to pop out of my skin. Luckily, when I've caught the running bug as an adult, I haven't gotten them.

I remember doing a piano exam when I was little with a quite swollen finger. I didn't like to tell the examiner so I just did the best I could. I scraped through luckily.

I do that when I have a day at Disney World. It's uphill to spend 12 hours walking, walking, walking. After three days I came home with shin splints in one leg.
