Can You Tell Stories?

I remember when I was a child,my mother used to tell me stories from the Ramayan and the Mahabharat.Sometimes she would tell me fairy tales. She is a great story teller with the capability to leave the listeners spellbound. Now my elder brother's seven year old son takes his dinner, finishes his homework, goes to bed and falls asleep. His mother- my sister-in-law- does not tell him stories.Mothers seem to have stopped telling stories to their children. Can you tell a story and leave the listeners mesmerized?

@SIMPLYD,That's good. You did what every mother should do.Telling stories to kid is,I think, essential for their mental growth. It also establishes a very cordial relationship between mother and kid.

My parents didn't tell us stories when we were young, we read story books by ourselves. Now that I am a mother, I always tell stories to my children even before they were born. I think storytelling is really good. It's a good bonding time, it can be a lesson time as well, and children like them so much! I don't only tell the stories from books, but always make up my own stories, the children love those made-up stories as well, and they always make their own stories too. I think this helps them to be more creative and imaginative too. It helps me as well.

@else34 That's really good! My parents always encourage us to read and bought us books as well, but we read them on our own since we were young. I guess they didn't know the importance of telling stories. Good that you have a home library!

@kaka135,I agree with each and every word you have said here.Unlike you,my parents, especially my mother, used to tell me a lot of stories. They were keen to make me a good, avid reader.Often they would gift me story books and magazines. Now I have a home library of my own which is brimming with great literature of my mother tongue Hindi.

My wife and I tell stories to our children. We found that children like stories very much. I think parents will regret about not telling stories to their children when their children are grown.

@else34 I think it is a good time to us to accompany our children. It is a very nice memorable time.

@hoong143 I love spending time among children. As long as children in our families don't become grown ups,it is good for us to spend time with them as good friends.I agree with you.

Yes surely. But the only person who gets mesmerised by my story is my son.

@toniganzon,But didn't you ever tried to tell stories to an audience? If you can mesmerise your son, then I am sure you can leave an audience spellbound.

@else34 No. A little kid has a different perception about life than adults. So it won't work.

I always used to read to my children before bedtime, but I was no good at making them up myself.

@jaboUK,You needn't make stories. There are thousands of stories and fairy tales. It depends on you how narrate them, how you make them picturesque, vivid with appropriate body language and voice. When my mom told me stories,I felt as if I was watching a movie.

@Jessicalynnt,I love telling stories. Can't claim to be a great story teller, but my brother's 5 year old daughter keeps insisting me to tell stories to her.Not only she,but some neighbour children too love listening stories from me.

@else34 that might be another way to make money, write them out, and turn them into kids books online!
