Giving Away Some Iris Flowers

Our daughter and her husband bought a house this past summer and she has asked me what type of flowers would be easy for her to grow, I was glad to hear her asking about growing some flowers as she has never really been much of a gardening person. I understand she doesn't have a lot of time to spend taking care of flower beds, so I decided she needed some flowers that were almost "care free". I have a lot of bearded iris growing around my house, so I have decided I needed to thin some of them out and I am going to give her some iris flowers to plant. Once they are established, you don't really have to do anything for them and they multiply and come back year after year. The picture above is my lavender bearded iris. I think they are one of the most beautiful colors and these have the sweetest smell! As soon as our ground dries out a little I will dig up a lot of these and help her plant them around her house. Do you have flowers in your yard that you consider to be "care free"?

I love iris flowers, my favorite are the little mini ones that are really short. I have this flower, not sure of the name, I think I've been told its Autumn Splendor. All you have to do is to thin it out once in a while. If your daughter lived near me I'd thin some out and share them with her. I also love my hostas, they are easy to grow and carefree.

You are so sweet, thank you! I know she would appreciate it, but Canada is quite a ways away from southern Oklahoma! I don't know the name of them either, but they are beautiful and apparently the butterflies like them too! I do have some hostas, but they don't do real well here due to the hot summers.

@sgbrown I split my plants up and share them with our son's girlfriend and her sister. They are both young and appreciate these carefree plants, and the price is always right when you share them like that. My nieces and nephews have come to me for some too.

@Juliaacv I really enjoy sharing my plants. The only problem I have is that I share with people that don't have anything to share back! LOL

I think that "perennials" give you a lot of work. But I love them.

I try to plant as many perennials as I can, @marlina. Sometimes they do take a lot of work, but at least I don't have to plant new ones every year.

Well, there are a lot of tropical flowers in my garden. I envy you for having an Iris blooms. Since we don't know if it is possible to plant them in my country.

Yes, I have several, the marigolds are absolutely "care free", they even auto seed each year, same for the myrabilis.

Myrabilis Jalapa plant from LadyDuck garden
@sgbrown The marigolds are annual, but I never have to plant them because they come back. Here is a photo of last year of my Myrabilis Jalapa, the same plant bear flowers of different colors. The seeds fell to the ground and every year you have plenty of new plants.

I think that here, in southern Oklahoma, marigolds are considered an annual. However, I did have some of mine come back this year. I plan on planting more and hopefully they will come back too. I don't know what myrabilis are...

@LadyDuck I think I have these! I just didn't recognize the "proper" name. I think they are commonly called 4 O'clock flowers. They smell just like honey suckle flowers to me. I love them and yes, mine come back and spread every year!

@sgbrown yer lucky, seems whene'er we plant any bulbs a lil invisible neon light starts flashin' - callin' to the gophers that the buffets open. yepperz, they'll eat hostas, too. i finally jest started growin' 'em'n pots. aint quite the same, but't least i've a few safe from harm...'xcept from grasshoppers anyhow.

@crazyhorseladycx Grasshoppers haven't been a problem on my hosta, but if the deer find them, they will be gone!

We get the occasional gopher or mole, I'm not sure which. We can see his trail running underground. So far, I haven't noticed where they have killed off any of my flowers. Maybe that is why some of my hostas don't come back!

I have exactly the same Iris in my gardens. Also for spring flowers tulips and hyacinth are pretty much care free. A bit of water and they do just fine.

@sgbrown That is strange no tulips, usually they are a very hardy flower.

@fishtiger58 I don't know what the problem is, but is has been very disappointing. I need to create a flower bed specifically for tulips and other spring bulbs and see what happens next spring.

Yes, I have daffodils and hyacinth that bloom every year. I don't know what is wrong with my tulips! I haven't had any bloom in the last 2 years!

I love black eyed Susan's, @BelleStarr I planted some last year but it doesn't look like they are coming back. It may have been too hot for them here last year. I'm glad you made me think of them, I want to get some more and try again!

Though they are lovely I don't grow them as once they've flowered that's it for the year. I like my flowers to keep on coming.

They are usually easy to grow, @mom210 The Georgia climate should be ok for them too. I once wrote an article on how to grow iris, perhaps it might help you. The link is below, if you would like to read it.
Iris flowers come in almost every color of the spectrum and are one of the easiest flowers to grow and maintain. Find some facts and history on the Bearded Iris flower as well as how to plant, grow, and maintain your iris.

I love irises. I would love to have some of your lavender ones. Mine are mostly pink. My favorite are the dark purple ones. You're right. They are mostly carefree. Perfect for today's busy gardeners.

I would trade you some lavender ones for some pink ones! I don't have any pink iris. I'm sure they are beautiful! Yes, iris are perfect for today's busy gardeners.
