Finally, I'm Getting Some Relief

canker sore cream

For the past three weeks I've had a lot of pain on my lower gum. I thought that I accidentally chewed on a popcorn kernel or something similar and possibly cracked a tooth under a crown. The only thing is that it didn't hurt all the time. Since I had an upcoming dentist appointment anyway, I had them look it over. I knew I also had a sore near that same tooth, but didn't expect it to be related. When I saw my dentist, his helper hit my crown with an instrument and asked if that hurt. Oddly enough it didn't so that ruled out any cracks in the tooth under the crown. My dentist took a look at the sore which was a canker sore, and said it was the largest one he'd ever seen before. He said that could easily be making my whole gum ache like it had been. My daughter looked at it a week ago, but decided it couldn't be a canker sore as they don't usually last more than a week or so. This one I've had for about three weeks. My dentist gave me a prescription for something to apply to it and it works wonders. After just one day and several applications my gum is barely throbbing any longer. I'm guessing that stress about my finances is what's caused the canker sore. I've gotten them before, but not for a long time and never near that particular tooth. I questioned whether the medication would work at first because usually when applying anything within the mouth, our saliva causes it to slide off the affected area before it has time to take effect. The interesting thing about this stuff is it sticks to that area easily and stays in place unless I talk too much. If you've not heard of these before, I'm including a link if you'd like to check it out. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Canker-sores.html

sorry i shouldnt have just mentioned teeth but the whole thing in that area. anyway, i had one last year, i was given bactidol and it got ok after 2days. they gave me a different cream/gel too but the mouthwash was enough. i might try this one you posted in the future, i find it a bit more convenient than a mouth wash.

@MGjhaud If I found a mouthwash that worked, I'd probably try that instead. Otherwise each time you talk or want to drink or eat something, the cream comes off, and it gets stuck on the inside of my teeth a bit too. I'm glad I have something that will heal it though, but possibly there are more than just the one option.

Glad you found something that would help you. It has been a while since I have had a canker sore. When I was younger I got them quite a bit. My dentist said I had to lay off of acidic foods such as orange juice and tomatoes.

I rarely eat those foods on a regular basis, so I don't know what it was that caused it. I especially don't know what caused it to be so large either. At least it's completely gone now.

@MarshaMusselman I remember how they felt when I was younger and I am also glad you got rid of it. I hope they don't return.

@Shellyann36 Although no one enjoys having them, I'd hope that if I did get them again that I'd realize it early enough and use the medicine on it again so it wouldn't get so large.

I am glad that this remedy works, canker sores can be very painful. I remember I had them more in the past, in recent time I have been spared.

I've not had them so much recently either. My poor daughter on the other hand has them fairly frequently. In fact, she just got a new one last night. The one I have feels like it's almost gone, but I'm trying to keep my tongue away so it can heal all the way, not that the tongue stops it healing. I still have minimal pain, but nothing like it was for the past three weeks and before I began taking this cream. I should have bought an over-the-counter product sooner. That may have done ti too. I just wasn't sure what it was.

@MarshaMusselman I always keep an over the counter cream at home, just in case I feel the pain.

@LadyDuck I may have to get some for the next time if there ever is a next time. This is the first it lasted this long. Usually they are gone within a week or so and I can ignore them as they don't usually cause my whole gum area to throb.

You've never gotten a canker sore in your mouth before? They aren't much fun even when a normal size. I used to get them a lot more than I do now, and that may be why I didn't recognize that's what this was. Even though this salve helped shrink it down it still took several weeks to shrink away completely, but once it quite hurting I quit using the salve provided.

It didn't hurt all that much when I was eating or drinking. It hurt more when I was working and writing. It was fine also when I was sleeping. It's still healing, but so much better now.

I'm happy this med worked for you. I would worry about having a sore for three weeks. Glad it's gone!

I was a bit concerned. I've not had many canker sores for the past few years and never any that caused my gums to throb. I didn't know what to expect. Had I not already had that appointment for another tooth, I'd have called anyway. I'd already tried calling the office several times before, but didn't call at the right times. The sore isn't gone yet, but the pain is. It still hurts a little but nothing like it was before. That just helps me remember to reapply the salve.

@DianneN I see my regular doctor this Wednesday about my knee. I might just mention it to him too just to be sure. It's so much better now though, that by then maybe it will be barely there if it's there at all.

@MarshaMusselman I would get it checked out by an MD if it isn't gone soon.

I usually in the past have used orajel fo calm the pain and let it heal. L-lysine orally is supposed to help. In the late seventies I started taking a b complex with C vitamin. At that time they called them "stress vitamins" and it helped me quit having them. I am sure you are correct that the stress over your finances is causing a problem for you.

Had I realized that the pain was caused by that canker sore, I'd have begun a regimen of salt, which has worked well for me before. I've swished with salt water and applied a little salt directly on the sore before. It burns, but I know it's doing some good. I used it a little before seeing the dentist, but since it lasted so long, I was a wee bit concerned it was something other than a canker sore. Probably salt would have helped anything at that point. By the end of this month, I hope to be caught up with all the bills finally.

Seems like a lot of irritation going on. That's great that the medication is effective. I hope it heals up quickly. Take care.

Muscle sore is really terrible. It is like having toothache. It affects our mood due to localized pain.

The sore isn't on a muscle, but on the inside of the gum area, but yes, it's not a good thing. It was almost worse than a toothache.
