Good morning and Happy Saturday. We had chipped beef on toast.Been awhile having this. All right.Elbows off the table. How many times have you heard this. We were out the other day.Invited to lunch. They have two sweet children. We sat down to have lunch and things move along smoothly. Then the mother correcting her children elbows off the table. Now the problem is.They she never told the children the reason for this. I myself never had been corrected on this. I do at times have my elbow on the table. If you are going to correct your child about the elbows. Then please explain to them .I supposed this will help the person posture. Do you correct your child ?.Elbow off the table. What happen to please? I am typing this .Waiting for my bread to come out of the oven. photo is public domaine

I was always taught to keep elbows off the table with no explanation. I just assumed it was something to do with manners. We were also told no singing at the table

No singing at the table! I can't imagine too many wanting to sing at the table but I guess kids might.

I have always been told not to put the elbows on the table, it's a matter of good manners. When we had lunch at the school, the nuns put a book under each armpit to be sure we did not put the elbow on the table. If we did the book felt to the ground and we were punished.

@JudyEv You are right, I also remember the books on the head to learn to walk gracefully and maintain a correct posture.

Adults come up with lots of odd ways to make kids follow different rules.

I can remember as a child being told not to leave my elbows on the table, I thought that it was because it displayed poor posture, but I could be wrong. I can almost smell your freshly baked bread from here, what a nice way to being my day-thanks for that!

@amadeo Thanks, just the mere thought of it conjured up wonderful warm memories of when I was younger and made fresh bread and yeast goodies on Saturday mornings. I gave it up when my back became too weak to knead the dough.

OH yes we often heard this when we were children. I think it is supposed to be good manners! Although for the life of me I do not know why it is deemed as rude.

Luckily, I've never had kids, so I really have no one to correct.

Great picture you found to go with this semi-funny post. Someone some time long ago decided it was improper to eat with elbows on the table. I'm sure most parents don't know the reason for this, but it was handed down to them from their parents. It's also good to put one's fork down between bites, but that one isn't taught as much as the one you shared.

Elbows off the table means less likely for you to dirty your arms if something were to spill. Or so I've been told.
